Create Your Claude Account and Chat

Create a Claude Free account and refine a thank-you message in your first chat.

Introduction

30 Second Summary

A short thank-you message can take longer than expected when you are unsure what to say. A vague idea often needs a little direction before it sounds ready to send.

In this project, you will create a personal Claude Free account and turn a vague request into a warm thank-you message for a neighbor. You will refine the same conversation with clear details and a follow-up request.

What You'll Build

You watch Claude transform a general neighbor message into a casual two-sentence thank-you that includes an offer to return the favor.

By the end of this project, you'll have:

  • A verified personal account for Claude Free that you can use in Google Chrome.
  • A visible first response that shows how a vague prompt leaves important details open to interpretation.
  • A polished two-sentence message that thanks your neighbor for bringing in your mail while you were away.
  • Secret Mission: Rename the finished conversation to Neighbor Thank-You Message and reopen it from your chat history.

Are there any prerequisites?

Claude account access is limited to adults aged 18 or older who are physically in a supported location.

Account verification requires a working email inbox plus a supported mobile number that receives SMS messages and remains accessible long-term.

Before We Start

This checkpoint connects your first Claude chat to a useful everyday goal: creating a thank-you message for your neighbor with clear purpose, tone, and length. It also confirms your eligibility through Claude's age, location, and long-term SMS access requirements.

Set Up Your Claude Account

Your thank-you message needs a working Claude account before you can start chatting. Claude requires a verified account before you can send your first prompt.

In this step, you will create a personal Claude Free account in Google Chrome. You will confirm an email sign-in link before completing SMS verification.

In this step, get ready to:
  • Request a Claude sign-in link using your email address.
  • Verify the email sign-in from your inbox.
  • Reach the empty Claude chat through mobile verification.
Start email sign-in

Claude uses your email address to start the account verification process. Choose an inbox that you can access during this step.

  • Use your Linux application menu to open Google Chrome.
  • Enter https://claude.ai in the address bar.
  • Enter your chosen email address in the email address field.
  • Click Continue with email.

Claude sends a login email to the address you entered. That email proves you can access the inbox attached to your account.

Didn't Receive the Login Email?

  • Check your inbox's spam folder for the Claude login email.
  • Compare the address shown in Claude with the inbox you are checking.

Help me troubleshoot my Claude login email. If the email is still missing, share the non-sensitive details with the NextWork community.

Verify your email sign-in

The next action depends on where you open the login email. Choose the tab that matches your device.

Same device

  • Switch back to your working email inbox.
  • Locate the email with the subject Secure link to log in to Claude.ai.
  • Click the login link inside the email.

You will return to your signed-in Claude account on the same device.

Different device

  • Access your working email inbox on the other device.
  • Locate the email with the subject Secure link to log in to Claude.ai.
  • Click the login link inside the email.
  • Read the generated verification code.
  • Return to the Claude tab on your original computer.
  • Enter the generated verification code on the original computer.

Claude verifies the email sign-in on your original computer.

Your email sign-in is now confirmed. The remaining verification uses the supported mobile number you arranged earlier.

Verify your mobile number

Mobile verification can feel personal because the verified number cannot be changed later. Claude requires this step for new accounts.

Use a Long-Term Number

The mobile number must come from a supported location. It must be able to receive a verification code by text message.

Phone verification cannot be skipped. Keep long-term access to the number you verify.

  • Enter the supported mobile number from earlier in the verification field.
  • Submit the mobile number using the button below the field.
  • Retrieve the six-digit code from your text messages.
  • Return to Claude's verification screen.
  • Type the six-digit code into the verification field.
  • Predict which screen Claude should show when verification succeeds.
  • Click Verify code.

You will see the Claude chat interface in Google Chrome. An empty conversation will have a prompt field ready for your first request.

That's the account setup complete. Your verified personal Claude Free account is ready for its first conversation.

Didn't Receive the SMS Code?

  • Confirm that the mobile number can receive SMS text messages.
  • Check that you entered the supported mobile number you arranged earlier.

Help me troubleshoot Claude mobile verification. If verification still fails, share the non-sensitive details with the NextWork community.

Your verified account is open at a fresh conversation. Next up, you will send a deliberately vague request to see which details Claude has to guess.

Send a First Vague Request

Your verified Claude account is ready. The empty conversation from earlier gives you a clean place to test your first request.

A short request gives Claude little direction. This step tests how much guidance one simple sentence provides.

In this step, get ready to:
  • Send a simple neighbor-message prompt.
  • Wait for Claude's first response.
  • Identify the choices Claude made without your direction.
Enter the vague request

The prompt field accepts natural language. Your first request uses one short sentence so its effect is easy to inspect.

  • Type this request into the prompt field:
Write a friendly message to my neighbor.

What does this prompt ask?

This prompt asks Claude to draft a message for a neighbor. The word friendly gives it a loose style target.

Submit the request

Before you submit it, how specific do you expect the response to be?

  • Click the submit button beside the prompt field.
  • Wait for Claude's response to finish appearing.

You'll see a written reply beneath your prompt. You now have your first live Claude response saved in this conversation.

No response yet?

  • Check that the full prompt appears in the conversation.
  • Click the submit button again if the request remains in the prompt field.

Ask for help with a response that does not appear.

Inspect Claude's choices

A prompt supplies the context Claude uses for its response. Missing details become choices that Claude makes for you.

Before you inspect the reply closely, which details do you expect Claude chose on its own?

  • Read the response from beginning to end.
  • Check whether the response gives a reason for writing.
  • Identify the precise tone used in the message.
  • Count the sentences to see the length Claude chose.

The exact wording of your response can vary. You did not set the reason or length.

Claude had to choose both. The word friendly gave broad tone guidance without defining the exact voice.

Why did Claude have to guess?

The prompt named a recipient. It also supplied one broad style word.

  • The reason for writing came from Claude.
  • The precise tone came from Claude.
  • The response length came from Claude.

This visible shortfall is the intended result. You can now see what a vague request leaves undecided.

You have seen how Claude fills the gaps in a vague request. Next up, you'll steer this same conversation with clearer details.

Improve the Message with Clear Details

Your first request produced a visible response from Claude. The result had to guess the message's purpose, tone, and length.

A more specific prompt gives Claude a clear target. In this step, you will add a purpose, warm tone, and two-sentence length.

In this step, get ready to:
  • Add purpose, tone, and length to a new request in the same conversation.
  • Submit the improved request.
  • Compare the two responses against your three requirements.
Add purpose, tone, and length

Useful instructions define what the response should accomplish. Purpose, tone, and length set the target for this rewrite.

  • Click inside the message area at the bottom of the open conversation.
  • Type Please rewrite it as a warm, two-sentence message thanking my neighbor for bringing in my mail while I was away..

The full improved request is now visible in the message area. It is ready to submit.

Submit the improved request

Keeping the rewrite in the same conversation gives Claude the earlier exchange as context. The word it points back to the existing message.

Before you submit it, do you expect Claude to make fewer guesses about the message?

  • Click the submit button.

When Claude finishes, you'll see a warm, two-sentence message thanking your neighbor for bringing in your mail while you were away.

That is the turning point: Claude now has a clear brief to follow.

Response Missing a Detail?

  • Compare your submitted text with the improved prompt above.
  • Check that your submitted prompt includes warm.
  • Check that your submitted prompt includes two-sentence.

Help me work out why my improved prompt missed a requirement.

Compare the two responses

A specific prompt gives you clear requirements for evaluating the result. You can now check whether the response matches the situation you described.

Before you compare the drafts, which response do you expect to match a real situation more closely?

  • Scroll up to the response below your first request.
  • Read the first response again.
  • Return to the latest response.
  • Read the latest response again.

The latest response thanks your neighbor for bringing in your mail while you were away.

The draft now follows your purpose, warm tone, and two-sentence length.

Your revised message now matches a clear situation. Next, you'll use a short follow-up to refine the same draft again.

Refine the Message with a Follow-Up

Your revised thank-you message now has a clear purpose. It also uses a warm tone within two sentences.

A follow-up prompt lets Claude revise the current draft using conversation context. This step uses one follow-up to target a casual tone plus an offer to return the favor.

In this step, get ready to:
  • Send one follow-up prompt in the current Claude conversation.
  • Read the revised message aloud to judge whether it suits your neighbor.
  • Confirm that the final message sounds casual.
Send the follow-up prompt

The existing conversation supplies the draft that Claude needs to revise. Staying in this chat keeps the new request connected to your earlier details.

  • Enter the follow-up in the message box beneath the current conversation by copying the text below:
Make it sound a little more casual and end with an offer to return the favor.

What does this follow-up change?

  • The casual tone brings the wording closer to an everyday conversation.
  • The new ending adds reciprocity to the thank-you.
  • Claude applies both changes to the draft already in the conversation.

Before you submit it, pause to consider whether both requested changes will appear in the next response.

  • Click the submit button.
  • Wait for Claude's revised response to finish.

You should see a more casual thank-you message. Its ending should offer to return the favor.

You have now shaped the same draft into a neighbor-ready message without restarting the conversation.

Missing One of the Changes?

  • Check that you entered the complete follow-up in the same conversation.
  • Compare your text with the prompt above if either requested change is missing.

Ask for help checking the revision if the result still misses a request.

Check the final message

A useful draft needs to sound natural when spoken. Reading it aloud helps you judge whether you would actually send it.

Before you read it aloud, consider whether the new draft will sound natural enough to send.

  • Read Claude's final revision aloud.
  • Check that the wording sounds casual.
  • Check that the final sentence offers to return the favor.
  • Decide whether you would feel comfortable sending it to your neighbor.

You should hear a casual message that still expresses thanks. You should also hear an offer to return the favor at the end.

That final check confirms your follow-up produced a message you can use in a real conversation.
