Research, Build, and Launch a Prompt Product
Validate a niche, build a prompt system, and launch a digital product on Gumroad.
Introduction
30 Second Summary
Millions of people switch careers every year. The hardest part is not learning new skills but convincing a hiring algorithm that your old experience counts in a completely new field.
In this project, you will validate real demand, build a professional prompt system that generates career-switch resumes, and launch it as a paid product on Gumroad.
What You'll Build
When a buyer pastes your prompt into ChatGPT, it asks five personalizing questions and generates a complete ATS-optimized resume that translates their old-career experience into their target field's language.
By the end of this project, you'll have:
- A before/after demonstration you can show anyone: a teacher's resume transformed into a project-manager resume in under 10 minutes.
- A live Gumroad URL where anyone can purchase your product with one click, delivering the PDF instantly.
- A repeatable demand validation framework for proving real people actively want and will pay for a solution before you build anything.
- Secret Mission: Build a complementary cold-outreach prompt and create a discounted bundle on Gumroad to maximize revenue per customer.
Do I need any accounts before starting?
You need a free Gumroad account before starting this project. ChatGPT and Canva accounts are set up in Step 1.
Before We Start
Before We Start...
Before we dive in, let's lock in what you're about to build and why it matters.
Set Up Your Tools
Before you can research demand, build prompts, or launch a product, you need three things in place: an AI tool for testing prompts, a design tool for packaging, and a storefront for selling.
All three tools are free to use. In this step, you will create accounts for ChatGPT and Canva, then confirm your Gumroad dashboard is ready to list products.
In this step, get ready to:
- Create a free ChatGPT account for prompt testing.
- Create a free Canva account for product design and packaging.
- Confirm your Gumroad Products page is ready for your first listing.
Create your ChatGPT account
ChatGPT is your prompt-testing workbench. Every prompt you write for your product gets tested here before it goes into the final PDF.
- Open your browser and go to chatgpt.com.
- Click Sign up and create a free account using your email, Google, or Apple login.
- If you already have a ChatGPT account, click Log in instead.
- Once you are logged in, type Hello in the message box at the bottom and press Enter.
ChatGPT responds with a greeting. This confirms your account is active and the chat interface is working.
Not seeing a response?
Make sure you are on chatgpt.com (not openai.com, which is the company's main site). If the page is loading slowly, try refreshing your browser.
Help me troubleshoot my ChatGPT account setup.
Create your Canva account
Canva is where you will design your product thumbnail and package everything into a professional PDF. The free tier has everything you need.
- Open a new browser tab and go to canva.com.
- Click Sign up and create a free account using your email, Google, or Facebook login.
- If you already have a Canva account, click Log in instead.
- Canva may ask you what you want to use it for. Select any option to continue to the dashboard.
You should see the Canva design dashboard with a search bar at the top and template categories below. This confirms your account is ready.
Seeing a pricing page instead of the dashboard?
Canva sometimes prompts you to upgrade to a paid plan after signing up. Look for a Skip or Maybe later link to continue with the free tier. You do not need a paid account for this project.
Help me get past the Canva pricing page.
Confirm your Gumroad Products page
Your Gumroad account is where the finished product goes live. Buyers will find it here, pay, and instantly receive your PDF.
- Switch back to your Gumroad creator dashboard.
- Click Products in the left sidebar.
- Confirm you see the New product button on this page.
You should see the Products page with the New product button visible. This is where your finished prompt product will be listed in Step 5.
Why Gumroad for your first launch?
Gumroad charges no monthly fees. You only pay when you make a sale (10% + $0.50 per transaction, plus credit card processing). This means going live today is zero risk.
Don't see the Products page?
Make sure you are on the creator dashboard, not the customer-facing storefront. The left sidebar should show options like Products, Posts, and Emails. If you see a public-facing shop instead, click your profile icon in the top right and look for a dashboard or creator link.
Help me find my Gumroad creator dashboard.
Your workbench is ready. You have an AI tool for testing prompts, a design tool for packaging, and a storefront for selling. Next up, you will find proof that real people are desperate for the product you are about to build.
Mine and Validate Your Pain Point
Your accounts are ready. Now comes the most important step in any digital product launch: proving that real people actually want what you're about to build.
42% of startups fail because they build something nobody wants. Before writing a single prompt, you need proof that people are actively searching for your solution, expressing urgency, and willing to pay. Without that proof, you're guessing.
In this step, get ready to:
- Mine demand signals from Google Search and Reddit.
- Score pain points by frequency, urgency, and buyer intent.
- Validate that career-change resume optimization is the highest-scoring niche.
Search Google for demand signals
Google's autocomplete and People Also Ask section reveal the exact questions thousands of people type every month. These aren't guesses. They're aggregated search data showing real demand.
- Open Google and search for how to write a resume for career change.
- Scroll down past the first few results and look at the People Also Ask section.
- Click on 2-3 of those questions to expand them. Google will load even more related questions below.
- Note every recurring question you see. These represent thousands of monthly searches from people stuck at "I don't know where to start."
You should see questions like "How do I explain a career change on my resume?" and "Is a functional resume good for career changers?" appearing repeatedly.
- Now search for career change resume no experience.
- Watch the autocomplete suggestions that appear as you type. Each suggestion is a proven high-volume search.
- Open a text file (or grab paper) and copy 5-8 of the strongest, most specific questions from both searches.
What counts as a strong question?
Look for questions that reveal a specific, painful blocker. "How do I write a resume for a career change with no experience in the new field?" is strong because it names the exact stuck point.
Generic questions like "What is a resume?" are weak. They don't signal someone ready to pay for a solution.
You should now have 5-8 real questions in your notes. Each one represents a potential buyer who typed that exact phrase into Google looking for help.
Not seeing People Also Ask?
Try searching in an incognito or private browser window. Your search history can affect what Google shows. If the section still doesn't appear, scroll further down the results page.
Help me find People Also Ask questions for career change resume searches.
Find demand proof on Reddit
Google shows you search volume. Reddit shows you emotional urgency. People on Reddit describe their struggles in detail, reveal what they've already tried, and sometimes outright say "I'll pay for help."
- Go to reddit.com and navigate to the search bar at the top.
- Search for career change resume and filter the results to the r/resumes subreddit.
- Look for posts with high engagement (lots of upvotes or comments). Pay attention to language like "I'm stuck," "I've applied to 100 jobs," "ATS keeps rejecting me," or "I'll pay for help."
- Repeat the same search in r/jobs and r/careerguidance.
- Also try searching switching careers across these same subreddits.
- Screenshot or note 3-5 high-engagement posts that show clear frustration and willingness to pay.
What are wallet-out signals?
A wallet-out signal is any language showing someone has already tried free solutions and failed, or is actively offering money. Phrases like "I've watched every YouTube video," "is it worth paying a resume writer," or "I hired a service but it was generic" prove people in this niche spend money.
You should now have 3-5 Reddit posts saved that prove people are actively struggling with career-change resumes and spending money on solutions that don't work well.
Not finding high-engagement posts?
Sort results by Top instead of Relevance and set the time filter to Past Year. You can also try Google by searching site:reddit.com career change resume to find Reddit threads indexed by Google.
Help me find career-change resume posts on Reddit.
Score your findings in a validation table
You have raw research. Now you need to turn it into a clear decision. A demand validation table scores pain points across multiple criteria so you pick the niche with the strongest signal, not just the one you like most.
- Open a text file or grab a piece of paper.
- Create a table with these columns: Pain Point | Frequency (how often asked) | Urgency (language used) | Wallet-Out Signals (tried free content, offered to pay) | Prompt-able (can AI solve it step-by-step?).
- Add at least 3 pain points you discovered during your research. Include "career-change resume / ATS optimization" as one row.
- Score each column as High, Medium, or Low based on what you found in Google and Reddit.
What makes a pain point score High?
- Frequency: High means dozens of Google autocomplete variations and multiple People Also Ask questions on the same topic.
- Urgency: High means Reddit posts use desperate language ("I'm stuck," "100+ applications, no callbacks," "ATS keeps rejecting me").
- Wallet-Out Signals: High means people mention paying for resume writers, buying templates that didn't work, or asking "is it worth hiring someone?"
- Prompt-able: High means the problem can be solved step-by-step with personalized inputs (job title, experience, target role).
Take a step back and look at your completed table. Which pain point scores High across all four columns?
"Career-change resume / ATS optimization" should be your clear winner. It scores High on frequency (dozens of Google questions), High on urgency (desperate Reddit posts), High on wallet-out signals (people already pay $200+ for resume coaches), and High on prompt-ability (AI can translate experience bullet-by-bullet with the right instructions). This is your validated niche.
Keep your research notes
Those Reddit posts and Google questions aren't just validation. You'll use the exact language people wrote when crafting your product description in Step 5. The words real people use to describe their pain are more persuasive than any marketing copy you could invent.
You now have hard evidence that thousands of people need exactly what you're about to build. Next up, you'll turn this validated pain point into a professional prompt system that produces consultant-quality resumes.
Build Your Core Prompt System
You've confirmed that thousands of people are actively searching for career-change resume help. Now it's time to build the product that solves their problem.
A single generic prompt like "write me a resume" produces the same bland output as free YouTube tutorials. Nobody pays $29 for that. A prompt system with role assignment, context-gathering questions, step-by-step logic, and anti-failure rules produces consultant-quality personalized output. That difference is what justifies the price.
In this step, get ready to:
- Write a prompt skeleton with role assignment and 5 context-gathering questions.
- Add an intelligence layer with keyword extraction, translation logic, and anti-failure rules.
- Test the complete prompt in ChatGPT and verify it produces a professional hybrid-format resume.
Write the prompt skeleton
Every effective prompt system starts with two things: a role assignment that tells the AI who to be, and context-gathering questions that personalize the output to each user.
- Create a new text file called prompt-system.txt on your Desktop. Open it in any text editor (Notepad, TextEdit, or VS Code).
- Paste the following prompt skeleton into the file:
Act as a senior career transition coach and ATS optimization specialist with 15 years of experience helping 1,000+ professionals successfully switch industries. You specialize in translating experience from one field into the language of another field so resumes pass ATS filters and impress hiring managers.
Before generating any resume content, ask the user these 5 questions one at a time:
1. What is your current/most recent job title and industry?
2. What is your target role and industry?
3. List 3-5 key responsibilities or achievements from your current role.
4. Do you have any certifications, courses, or side projects in your target field?
5. Paste a job description for your target role (or describe the type of role).
Wait for the user to answer all 5 questions before proceeding.
What does this prompt skeleton do?
The role assignment ("Act as a senior career transition coach...") activates the AI's domain-specific knowledge. Without it, the AI defaults to a generic assistant persona that produces generic output.
The 5 questions force personalization. Instead of producing a one-size-fits-all resume, the AI gathers the user's unique situation first. This is what separates a $29 product from a free prompt someone found on Twitter.
- Save prompt-system.txt.
- Read through your file. You should see the role assignment paragraph followed by 5 numbered questions and a "Wait" instruction at the end.
File looks garbled or has strange characters?
Make sure your text editor is set to plain text mode, not rich text. In TextEdit on macOS, go to Format then click Make Plain Text. In Notepad on Windows, this is already the default.
help me fix formatting issues in my prompt text file
Add the intelligence layer
The skeleton tells the AI what to ask. Now you need instructions that tell it what to do with the answers. This is where prompt engineering techniques like keyword extraction and output formatting turn a basic prompt into a professional system.
- Open prompt-system.txt and add the following directly below the "Wait for the user to answer all 5 questions before proceeding." line:
Once you have all 5 answers, generate a complete resume following these rules:
KEYWORD EXTRACTION:
- Extract keywords and phrases from the target job description
- Identify recurring skills, tools, and responsibility language
TRANSLATION WITHOUT FABRICATION:
- Rewrite each experience bullet using target-field vocabulary
- Keep all facts, job titles, and employers true and intact
- Only change the description of the work, not the work itself
OUTPUT FORMAT (Hybrid Resume):
- Start with a 2-3 line transition-aware summary naming the target role
- Include a skills section mirroring the target job description (5-8 items)
- List experience in reverse-chronological order with translated bullets
- Quantify results with numbers wherever possible
ANTI-FAILURE RULES:
- Never use functional resume format (ATS systems cannot parse it correctly and recruiters view it as hiding something)
- Never fabricate job titles or responsibilities
- Never use generic filler like "hard-working team player"
- Always keep real job titles and employers intact
Why these specific rules?
- "Translation without fabrication" is the core methodology used by professional career coaches. It keeps all facts true while rewriting descriptions in target-field vocabulary.
- The hybrid resume format (summary + skills + experience) is the 2026 standard for career changers. ATS systems cannot parse functional resumes correctly, and recruiters treat them as a red flag.
- Anti-failure rules prevent the AI from doing what AI loves to do: making things up and sounding generic. These guardrails are what make the output trustworthy.
- Save prompt-system.txt.
- Your file should now flow from role assignment, to 5 questions, to the intelligence layer, to anti-failure rules. The complete system reads as one continuous set of instructions for the AI.
Not sure if you have everything?
Check that your file has these 4 sections in order: (1) Role assignment paragraph, (2) Five numbered questions with "Wait" instruction, (3) Rules with KEYWORD EXTRACTION, TRANSLATION WITHOUT FABRICATION, OUTPUT FORMAT, and (4) ANTI-FAILURE RULES. If any section is missing, scroll up and add it from the code block above.
help me verify my prompt system is complete
✔️ Awesome, I've got everything!
Great. Make sure you've saved your file before moving on to testing.
ⓧ I'd like to double check the full code
Your prompt-system.txt should contain these sections in this exact order:
- The role assignment paragraph ("Act as a senior career transition coach...").
- The 5 context-gathering questions with the "Wait" instruction.
- The intelligence layer starting with "Once you have all 5 answers" and containing KEYWORD EXTRACTION, TRANSLATION WITHOUT FABRICATION, and OUTPUT FORMAT sections.
- The ANTI-FAILURE RULES section with 4 "Never/Always" rules.
Scroll up and compare your file against the two code blocks above. Each block is added in sequence to build the complete file.
Test the prompt in ChatGPT
A prompt system is only worth selling if it actually produces impressive output. Time to put yours through a real test.
- Switch back to ChatGPT in your browser.
- Select all the text in your prompt-system.txt file and copy it.
- Paste the entire prompt system into a new ChatGPT conversation and press Enter.
Before you answer the questions, think about this: what do you expect the output to look like for a teacher switching to instructional design? Will it sound like a generic resume, or will it use L&D-specific language?
- ChatGPT should respond by asking you Question 1. Answer all 5 questions using this test scenario:
Question 1: High school English teacher, education industry, 5 years experience.
Question 2: Instructional Designer roles in corporate L&D (Learning & Development).
Question 3: Designed curriculum for 120+ students, ran professional development workshops for 15 teachers, improved student assessment scores by 22%.
Question 4: No formal certifications in L&D yet.
Question 5: Looking for Instructional Designer roles at corporate training companies. Key requirements typically include ADDIE methodology, stakeholder collaboration, LMS management, and learner assessment design.
Why this test scenario?
Teacher-to-instructional-designer is a common career switch with clear vocabulary translation opportunities. "Designed curriculum" should become something like "developed ADDIE-aligned learning programs." "Ran workshops" should translate to "facilitated stakeholder training sessions."
If your prompt produces these translations, it's working. If the output still says "designed curriculum" in teacher language, iterate on your prompt.
- Answer each question as ChatGPT presents it, using the test answers above.
- After answering all 5 questions, ChatGPT generates the complete resume. Review the output.
Check the output against these quality signals:
- Does the summary mention the target role (Instructional Designer) and frame the transition positively?
- Does the skills section include L&D keywords like "instructional design," "ADDIE," "stakeholder alignment," or "learner satisfaction metrics"?
- Are the experience bullets translated? "Designed curriculum for 120+ students" should now read more like "Developed learning programs for 120+ learners using structured instructional methodologies."
- Are real job titles kept intact (still says "English Teacher" as the position held)?
- Is the format hybrid (summary + skills + reverse-chronological experience)?
What if the output isn't perfect on the first try?
That's expected. Prompt engineering is iterative. If the translations are too weak, try adding more specific examples to your TRANSLATION section. If the AI ignores a rule, make that rule bolder (move it to the top, add "CRITICAL:" before it).
Run the prompt 2-3 times, tweaking each time, until the output reads like a $200 career coach wrote it. This iteration process IS prompt engineering.
ChatGPT not asking the 5 questions?
If ChatGPT skips straight to generating a resume without asking questions first, check that your prompt includes "ask the user these 5 questions one at a time" and "Wait for the user to answer all 5 questions before proceeding." Both instructions need to be present.
If it still skips questions, start a new conversation and paste the prompt again. ChatGPT occasionally misinterprets instructions in conversations with prior context.
help me fix my prompt so ChatGPT asks the questions
- Once you're satisfied with the output quality, save any final edits to prompt-system.txt.
Your prompt system produces professional-quality output that translates career experience into target-field language. Next up, you'll turn that output into visible sales proof and package everything into a product buyers can download.
Create Proof and Package the Product
Your prompt system works. You tested it, and it transforms career-change resumes like a professional coach would. But buyers do not know that yet.
Prompt product buyers have been burned by generic dumps that produce garbage output. The only thing that earns trust is visible proof: before/after examples showing the prompt actually transforms a resume. Without that proof, your listing looks identical to every $5 commodity prompt on the market.
In this step, get ready to:
- Generate 2 before/after resume transformations as sales proof.
- Package your prompt system, instructions, and proof into a professional PDF.
- Create a product thumbnail image for your Gumroad listing.
Generate your before/after proof examples
Before/after examples are the single most persuasive element in a prompt product listing. They show a buyer exactly what their $29 gets them, in a way no description can.
- Switch back to ChatGPT where you tested your prompt in the previous step.
- Start a new chat by clicking New chat in the sidebar.
- Paste your complete prompt system from prompt-system.txt into the message box and send it.
ChatGPT will ask you the 5 context-gathering questions. Answer as a fictional teacher switching to project management:
- Current job: High school Math Teacher, 6 years in education.
- Target role: Project Manager in a tech company.
- Key achievements: managed a $50K annual department budget, coordinated 8-teacher curriculum overhaul across 3 grade levels, led parent-teacher committee of 40+ members, improved student pass rates by 18% through new tracking system.
- Target-field credentials: Google Project Management Certificate (Coursera), volunteer event coordinator for local nonprofit.
- Target job description: describe as "Project Manager role requiring stakeholder management, Agile methodology, budget oversight, and cross-functional team coordination."
Review the output. Your "before" is the raw teacher-language bullets you typed. Your "after" is what ChatGPT produced with translated, keyword-rich language.
What should I see?
The output should translate "managed a $50K annual department budget" into something like "Oversaw $50K annual budget allocation with quarterly variance reporting." It should include project management keywords like "stakeholder alignment," "cross-functional coordination," "Agile," and "risk mitigation."
If the output still reads like a teacher resume, go back to your prompt in prompt-system.txt and strengthen the "translation without fabrication" instruction. Then test again.
- Copy both the before (your raw input bullets) and the after (ChatGPT's translated output) into a new section of your text file or document.
- Label it "Example 1: Teacher to Project Manager."
Now generate your second example. Start another new chat, paste the prompt again, and answer as a Retail Manager switching to Sales Operations:
- Current job: Retail Store Manager, 4 years at a national chain.
- Target role: Sales Operations Analyst.
- Key achievements: grew store revenue 32% year-over-year, trained and managed team of 15 associates, reduced inventory shrinkage by $12K annually, built weekly sales reporting process for district leadership.
- Target-field credentials: HubSpot Sales Software certification, built personal CRM tracker in Google Sheets.
- Target job description: describe as "Sales Operations role requiring CRM management, pipeline reporting, sales forecasting, and cross-team process optimization."
- Review the output. Confirm that retail language like "grew store revenue" becomes Sales Ops language like "drove 32% YoY revenue growth through data-driven territory optimization."
- Copy the before/after into your document and label it "Example 2: Retail Manager to Sales Operations."
Why two examples from different industries?
Two diverse examples prove your prompt works for any career switch, not just one specific path. A buyer who is an accountant switching to UX sees the pattern and thinks "this will work for me too."
Output looks generic or templated?
If the translated bullets still sound vague ("managed projects" instead of field-specific language), your prompt's intelligence layer needs sharper instructions. Add a line like "You MUST use terminology specific to the target industry. Reference exact tools, methodologies, and metrics that hiring managers in that field expect to see." Then re-run the test scenario.
Help me make my prompt output more industry-specific
Package everything into a sellable PDF
A text file with a prompt is not a product. A professionally designed PDF with clear structure, usage instructions, and proof examples is what separates a $29 product from a free Reddit post.
- Switch back to Canva in your browser.
- Click the search bar at the top of the dashboard.
- Type ebook template and press Enter.
- Browse the free templates and select one with a clean, professional look. Avoid overly decorative designs.
- Click Customize this template to open it in the editor.
You now have a multi-page template to work with. Structure your PDF with these pages in order:
- Page 1 (Cover): Replace the template title with "Career-Switch Resume Generator." Add a subtitle like "Your AI-Powered Career Transition Tool."
- Page 2 (Quick-start): Add the text "Copy this prompt, paste into ChatGPT or Claude, answer the 5 questions, get your resume." Keep it short. Buyers want to know they can use this in under 10 minutes.
- Pages 3-4 (Prompt system): Paste your complete prompt from prompt-system.txt. Include the role assignment, all 5 questions, the intelligence layer, and the anti-failure rules.
- Pages 5-6 (Before/after examples): Add your two transformation examples. For each, show the "before" bullets in plain text and the "after" output clearly labeled.
- Final page (Tips): Add usage tips like "Run the prompt once to get a draft, then ask the AI to adjust the tone or add more metrics" and "For best results, paste a real job description from the company you are targeting."
Keep it scannable
Use large headings, short paragraphs, and bullet points throughout. Buyers skim before they read. If the PDF looks dense or overwhelming, they will assume the prompt is complicated too.
- Once all pages are filled in, click Share in the top-right corner of Canva.
- Click Download.
- Set the file type to PDF Standard.
- Click Download to save the file to your computer.
- Rename the downloaded file to career-switch-resume-generator.pdf.
Open the PDF on your computer and scroll through it. Confirm you see all sections: cover, quick-start, prompt system, both before/after examples, and tips.
PDF looks messy or text is cut off?
If your prompt text overflows the text boxes, reduce the font size or add an extra page. In Canva, click the + icon at the bottom of the page list to add a blank page.
If formatting looks off after download, re-download and select PDF Standard instead of PDF Print. The Print option uses CMYK color which can look different on screen.

Create your product thumbnail
Your thumbnail is the first thing a potential buyer sees on Gumroad. It needs to look professional enough that someone trusts it with $29.
- Return to the Canva home dashboard by clicking the Canva logo in the top-left corner.
- Click the search bar and type digital product mockup.
- Press Enter to search.
- Select a clean, minimal template from the free options. Look for one with a device mockup or simple product frame.
- Click Customize this template to open it.
- Replace the template title text with Career-Switch Resume Generator.
- Add a subtitle: ATS-Optimized in 10 Minutes.
- Adjust colors if needed to look professional. Stick to 2-3 colors maximum.
- Click Share in the top-right corner.
- Click Download.
- Set the file type to PNG.
- Click Download to save the thumbnail to your computer.
- Rename the file to thumbnail.png.
Open thumbnail.png on your computer. Confirm it shows your product title clearly and looks like something you would trust enough to click on a marketplace.
Thumbnail looks blurry or low quality?
Make sure you selected PNG as the file type, not JPG. PNG preserves text sharpness. If the text is still hard to read, increase the font size in Canva. Your title should be readable even at thumbnail size.
Help me improve my product thumbnail
Before you move on, do you think you have everything a buyer needs to trust this product? Check your files.
- Confirm you have career-switch-resume-generator.pdf saved on your computer with all sections complete.
- Confirm you have thumbnail.png saved on your computer with your product title visible.
Why does proof matter so much for prompt products?
The prompt marketplace is flooded with generic "1000 prompts for $5" products. Buyers have learned that most of these produce the same bland output as typing a basic question into ChatGPT. Before/after examples are the only way to prove your prompt system produces genuinely better results.
This is why the winning prompt product format in 2026 is a niche system bundle: a focused set of prompts for one specific buyer type, plus a workflow document, plus visible proof of results.
You now have a complete, professional product ready to sell. Your PDF has the prompt system, proof it works, and clear instructions. Your thumbnail looks trustworthy. Next up, you will put this live on Gumroad where real buyers can find it and purchase with one click.
Launch on Gumroad
Your product PDF is packaged, your thumbnail is ready, and your validated pain point has real demand behind it. All of that work lives on your hard drive right now, which means it earns exactly $0.
In this step, you will take your product live on Gumroad. Gumroad charges no monthly fees and only takes a cut when you make a sale, so publishing today is zero risk. Every day you delay is a day someone searches "career change resume help" and buys from a competitor instead.
In this step, get ready to:
- Create your Gumroad product listing with the correct name, price, PDF, and thumbnail.
- Write a product description that sells the transformation, not just the file.
- Publish your product live and share the URL in one relevant place.
Create your product listing
Your Gumroad Products page is already open from Step 1. Time to create the actual product listing and upload everything you built in Step 4.
- Click New product on your Products page.
- Select the digital product type.
- Set the product name to Career-Switch Resume Generator: ATS-Optimized in 10 Minutes.
- Set the price to $29.
Why $29?
Below $29 signals a commodity prompt dump that buyers associate with low quality. Above $69 requires testimonials and social proof a new seller cannot provide yet.
The $29 price point sits in the sweet spot for niche prompt system bundles: it signals real value while remaining an impulse buy for someone whose job search is stalled.
- Click the Content tab in the product editor.
- Upload your career-switch-resume-generator.pdf file here.
- Add your thumbnail.png as the cover image.
You should now see your PDF listed under the Content tab and your thumbnail displayed as the product cover.
Don't see an upload option?
Make sure you are in the Content tab, not the Product tab. The Content tab is where you upload the files that buyers receive after purchase.
If your file fails to upload, confirm it is under 5 GB and in PDF format. Help me troubleshoot my Gumroad file upload.
Write your product description
Your description is the sales page. It needs to speak directly to the pain your buyer is feeling right now and show them exactly what they get.
- Switch to the Product tab in the product editor and find the description field.
- Write a Hook at the top: "Switching careers but your resume keeps getting rejected by ATS? This prompt system generates a complete, keyword-optimized resume in 10 minutes, without hiring a $200/hr resume writer."
- Write a What's included section: the prompt system, usage guide, 2 before/after examples, and anti-failure rules.
- Write a Who it's for section: "Career switchers with real experience who keep getting filtered out because their resume speaks the wrong language."
- Write a What it replaces section: "Hours of guesswork, generic templates, or $200+ career coaching sessions."
Why structure the description this way?
Each section answers a different objection a buyer has. The hook grabs attention with their exact pain. "What's included" proves substance.
"Who it's for" confirms they are the right buyer. "What it replaces" anchors the $29 price against $200+ alternatives so the cost feels tiny by comparison.
Scroll through the editor preview to confirm your description reads clearly with each section visible.
Publish and share your product
Everything is set: name, price, PDF, thumbnail, and description. Time to go live.
Before you hit publish, what do you think will happen? Will buyers be able to find your product immediately, or is there an approval step?
- Click Publish at the top of the page.
Your product is now live. Gumroad publishes instantly with no approval queue.
- Copy your shareable product URL by selecting your product on the Products dashboard and clicking Copy URL.
- Open that URL in a new browser tab to see your live product page as a buyer would.
You should see your thumbnail, product name, the $29 price, and the full description you wrote.
- Run a test purchase to confirm the checkout flow works: while still logged in to Gumroad, click the purchase link on your product page.
- On the checkout page, you will see Test card as the payment method because you are the product owner. Click Pay to complete the test.
- Confirm you receive a confirmation email and that the PDF download link works.
What is a test purchase?
When you are logged into your own Gumroad account and buy your own product, Gumroad automatically uses a test card instead of charging you real money. This lets you see exactly what your buyers experience, from checkout to file delivery.
Never use your real credit card to purchase your own product. Gumroad flags self-payments for security and may suspend your account.
Product page shows a 'Not found' error?
Make sure you clicked Publish (not just saved your edits). An unpublished product is not accessible via the public URL.
If you customized the URL slug, the old link will not redirect. Go back to your Products dashboard, select your product, and click Copy URL to get the current link. Help me fix my Gumroad product page not loading.
- Share your product URL in one relevant place today. Post it as a helpful resource in a Reddit thread on r/resumes or r/careerguidance where someone is asking for career-change resume help, or share it on LinkedIn with a post about career transitions.
Frame it as helpful, not spammy
When sharing on Reddit, answer the person's question first with genuine advice from what you learned during demand validation. Then mention your product as an additional resource. Posts that lead with value get upvoted. Posts that lead with a link get removed.
You just went from validated idea to live, purchasable product in a single session. Your prompt system is now earning potential every time someone searches for career-change resume help.
Secret mission
Build an Upsell Bundle
The highest-earning prompt sellers don't sell one product. They sell a system. After someone rewrites their resume, their next pain point is reaching hiring managers in a brand-new field. Build a cold outreach prompt and bundle it with your resume generator to double your revenue per customer.
Clean Up Your Resources
Clean Up Your Resources
This project runs entirely on free-tier tools and a zero-fee marketplace. Decide whether to keep your resources running, pause them to come back later, or delete them entirely.
Resources you used:
- Gumroad product listings (2 products + 1 bundle version). Free to maintain. Gumroad only charges 10% + $0.50 per transaction when a sale is made.
- Local files: prompt-system.txt, cold-outreach-prompt.txt, career-switch-resume-generator.pdf, thumbnail.png, and your validation table.
- ChatGPT account (free tier, no charges).
- Canva account (free tier, no charges).
Keep everything running
No action needed. Choose this if you want your products to stay live and potentially earn revenue while you sleep.
- Your Gumroad listings cost $0 to maintain. You only pay fees when a sale comes through.
- For each $29 sale, you keep approximately $25.60 after Gumroad's 10% + $0.50 fee (before credit card processing of 2.9% + $0.30).
- Your ChatGPT and Canva accounts remain on free tiers with no charges.
- Consider adding more before/after examples over time, testing the prompt with new career transitions, or raising the price as you collect reviews.
Pause - I'll come back to this later
Hide your products from buyers temporarily while keeping your files and accounts intact.
- In your Gumroad Products dashboard, click the three-dot menu to the right of each product and select archive. This hides the product from your profile without deleting it.
- Your local files (prompt-system.txt, cold-outreach-prompt.txt, career-switch-resume-generator.pdf, thumbnail.png) stay on your computer. No action needed.
- Your ChatGPT and Canva accounts stay active on their free tiers. No action needed.
- When you are ready to resume, go to the Archived tab in your Gumroad Products dashboard and unarchive your products.
Delete - I don't want to use this again
Remove all project resources and start fresh. This is permanent for Gumroad products and account deletions.
- In your Gumroad Products dashboard, click the three-dot menu to the right of each product and select permanently delete. Repeat for both your Resume Generator and Cold Outreach products.
- Delete your local project files. On macOS or Linux, open your terminal and run the command below. On Windows, select all the files in File Explorer and delete them.
rm prompt-system.txt cold-outreach-prompt.txt career-switch-resume-generator.pdf thumbnail.png
- If your validation table is a local text file, delete it the same way. If it is on paper, recycle it.
- To delete your ChatGPT account, go to chatgpt.com, click your profile icon, open Settings, navigate to Data Controls, and select Delete Account. Follow the confirmation prompts to finalize.
- To delete your Canva account, go to canva.com, click your profile icon, select Settings, then Account & security, and click Delete account at the bottom of the page. Confirm with your password to finalize.
