Canva x Build & Brew Social Media Post

Design and post a personalized Build & Brew social card in Canva.

Introduction

30 Second Summary

Every Build & Brew session creates a story worth sharing. A great social media post turns that story into a magnet that brings new members to your next session.

In this project, you will customize a Build & Brew social media template in Canva, swap in your own photo and session details, and post the finished design live on social media.

What You'll Build

Picture scrolling through your feed and seeing your own polished Build & Brew post with your photo, your name, and the story of what your group built together.

By the end of this project, you'll have:

  • A personalized Build & Brew post card featuring your photo, name, role, a punchy headline about what your group built, and your session story.
  • A downloaded PNG file ready to upload to any social media platform with crisp, sharp text.
  • A live post on LinkedIn, Instagram, or X with a caption that invites people to join your Build & Brew chapter.
  • An optional Secret Mission to push your skills further.

Are there any prerequisites?

None. This project walks you through everything from creating a free Canva account to publishing your post. All you need is a web browser and a photo from a Build & Brew session.

Before We Start

Before we dive in, let's get clear on what you're about to create and why it matters for your Build & Brew chapter.

Set Up Canva and Get Your Own Copy of the Template

Before you can personalize your Build & Brew post, you need two things: a free Canva account and your own editable copy of the template.

The Build & Brew template is a shared file that other ambassadors also use. Editing the original would change it for everyone. In this step, you'll create your Canva account and make a personal copy that's yours to customize freely.

In this step, get ready to:
  • Create a free Canva account (or sign in to your existing one).
  • Open the shared Build & Brew template and browse its dark and light variants.
  • Make your own editable copy of the template.
Create your free Canva account

Canva is a free, browser-based design tool. You don't need to download or install anything.

  • Open your web browser (Chrome, Safari, or Firefox) and go to canva.com.
  • Click Sign up to create a free account.
  • Choose your preferred sign-up method: email, Google, or Facebook.
  • Follow the on-screen prompts to complete your registration.

Once you're signed in, you'll land on the Canva homepage.

Already have a Canva account?

Click Log in instead of Sign up, and sign in with your existing credentials. You'll land on the same homepage.

🙋‍♀️ Seeing a prompt to start a free trial?

Canva may offer you a free trial of Canva Pro during sign-up. You do not need Pro for this project. Look for the option to continue with the free plan. No credit card is required for the free account.

Open the Build & Brew template and browse its variants

The Build & Brew template contains ready-made post layouts you'll customize with your own details.

Look at the bottom of the editor. You'll see a page list showing multiple pages.

  • Click through the pages at the bottom of the editor to browse what's inside.
  • Notice the two types of variants: dark background and light background versions of the same post layout.

What's inside the template?

Each page has the same layout with placeholder content. You'll see a large photo area, the NextWork logo in the top right corner, a name and role line (like "TRISTAN CRAVELLO | BREW MASTER"), a headline, a description paragraph, a location and date line, and a "COME BUILD WITH US" call to action.

The only difference between the pages is the background colour. You'll pick one variant to customize in the next step.

Make your own copy of the template

You're currently viewing the shared original. Any edits you make here would change the template for every other ambassador who uses it. You need your own personal copy first.

  • Click File in the top menu bar of the editor.
  • Select Make a copy.

Before you continue, what do you think will happen when Canva makes a copy?

A new browser tab opens with your personal copy of the template. You can see the same multiple pages with dark and light background variants at the bottom of the editor. This copy is entirely yours to edit.

Why make a copy?

The original template is a shared resource. Your copy lives in your own Canva account and any changes you make only affect your version. Other Build & Brew ambassadors can still use the original to create their own posts.

🙋‍♀️ Don't see a new tab?

Your browser may be blocking pop-ups. Check for a pop-up notification in your browser's address bar and allow pop-ups from Canva. Then try clicking File and Make a copy again.

Your workspace is set up. Next up, you'll swap in your own photo and choose between the dark and light background variants.

Add Your Photo and Choose Your Variant

Your Canva account is set up and you have your own editable copy of the Build & Brew template. Now it's time to start making this template yours.

Right now, every element in the template is placeholder content. Swapping in your own photo from a Build & Brew session is the fastest way to transform it from a generic design into something that looks and feels personal.

In this step, get ready to:
  • Choose between the dark and light background variant for your post.
  • Upload a Build & Brew session photo and place it into the template frame.
Choose your background variant

The template includes both dark and light background variants, each on its own page. Pick the one that matches the mood you want for your post.

  • Look at the page list at the bottom of the Canva editor. You'll see thumbnails for each page in the template.
  • Click through the pages to preview both the dark and light background variants.
  • Click on the page with the variant you want to use for your post.

The selected page now fills the main editing area. This is the page you'll customize for the rest of the project.

Which variant should I choose?

Both variants contain the same layout and fields. The dark background gives a bold, high-contrast look that stands out in busy feeds. The light background feels cleaner and more open.

Pick whichever you think will grab attention on the platform you plan to post to. There's no wrong answer here.

Upload your Build & Brew photo

Before you can place your photo into the template, you need to upload it to Canva. The Uploads panel in the left sidebar is where all your uploaded images live.

  • Click Uploads in the left sidebar panel.
  • Click Upload files.
  • Select a photo from your Build & Brew session. A group photo, someone building at a laptop, or a shot of the workspace all work well.

Your photo appears as a thumbnail in the Uploads panel once the upload completes.

Replace the placeholder photo with yours

The template has a large placeholder photo taking up about 60% of the design. Dragging your photo directly onto it tells Canva to swap them within the same frame.

  • Drag your uploaded photo from the Uploads panel directly onto the existing placeholder photo in the template.

Canva automatically replaces the placeholder within the frame. Your Build & Brew photo now fills the same space.

  • If your photo needs repositioning within the frame, double-click the photo to enter crop mode.
  • Drag to adjust the photo's position until the framing looks right.
  • Click outside the photo frame when you're happy with the positioning.

Photo not replacing the placeholder?

Make sure you're dragging the photo directly onto the placeholder image, not onto a blank area of the template. The placeholder should highlight when you hover your photo over it.

If the photo landed as a separate element on top of the template instead of replacing the placeholder, press Cmd+Z (macOS) or Ctrl+Z (Windows) to undo. Then try dragging again, aiming directly at the center of the placeholder image.

Before you move on, scan your template page from top to bottom. What should have changed, and what should still be the same?

Your chosen variant page now shows your own photo in the photo area. All the text fields still show placeholder content. That's expected.

Your post already looks like yours at first glance. Next up, you'll replace all that placeholder text with your real Build & Brew story.

Tell Your Build & Brew Story

Your photo is in place and the post already feels like yours at first glance. But take a closer look at the text around it.

Right now, someone else's name, event, and story sit next to your photo. Anyone reading will notice that mismatch instantly. In this step, you'll replace every text field with your own details so the post tells your actual Build & Brew story.

In this step, get ready to:
  • Replace the name and role placeholder with your own details.
  • Write a scroll-stopping headline about what your group built.
  • Fill in your session story, location, and date.
Replace your name and role

The name and role line identifies who created this post. Right now it shows a placeholder name, so let's swap in yours.

  • Double-click the name and role text on your post to enter edit mode.
  • Press Cmd+A (macOS) or Ctrl+A (Windows) to select all the placeholder text.
  • Type your own name in all caps, followed by a pipe separator and your role.
  • Click anywhere outside the text box to finish editing.

What format should I use?

Follow the format YOUR NAME | YOUR ROLE. Keep everything in all caps to match the template's style.

For example: JANE DOE | BUILD MASTER or JANE DOE | BREW MASTER.

Your name and role now appear on the post where the placeholder used to be.

Text not changing?

  • Make sure you double-click the text, not single-click. A single click selects the entire element and lets you move it. A double-click opens the text for editing.
  • If you accidentally moved the text box, press Cmd+Z (macOS) or Ctrl+Z (Windows) to undo.
  • If the font or colour changed after typing, the template formatting should stay intact as long as you selected and replaced the text rather than deleting and retyping into an empty box.

Help me edit text in my Canva template. The text is not updating when I try to change it.

Write your headline

The headline is the largest text on your post. It's what someone reads first after your photo catches their eye, so a strong headline makes people stop scrolling.

  • Double-click the headline text on your post.
  • Press Cmd+A (macOS) or Ctrl+A (Windows) to select all the placeholder text.
  • Type a punchy one-liner about what your group built during the session.
  • Click outside the text box to finish.

Need headline inspiration?

Focus on what your group accomplished and what would make someone stop scrolling. Here are two examples to spark ideas:

  • "We built a resume scanner that actually works."
  • "Four first-timers deployed an API in 47 minutes."

Your headline now reflects what your group actually built during the session.

Fill in your session story and details

The description and location fields below your headline give readers the full picture of your Build & Brew session.

  • Double-click the description text on your post.
  • Select all the placeholder text with Cmd+A (macOS) or Ctrl+A (Windows).
  • Write 2-3 sentences telling the story of your session: what you started with, what happened, and what the group walked away with.
  • Click outside the text box to finish.

Your session story now fills the description area. One field left.

  • Double-click the location and date line at the bottom of your post.
  • Select the placeholder text and replace it with your city and session date.
  • Click outside the text box to finish.

What format for location and date?

Follow the same style as the template: CITY | DATE. For example: NEW YORK | 15TH AUG. Keep everything in all caps to stay consistent with the rest of the post.

Now take a moment and read through every text element on your page from top to bottom. Is there any placeholder text still hiding?

Every field should show your real content. Your name and role, headline, session story, and location and date should all reflect your actual Build & Brew experience with no placeholder text remaining.

Still seeing placeholder text?

Slowly scroll through the page from top to bottom and check each text field. Any field that still shows generic or unfamiliar wording needs to be double-clicked and replaced with your own content.

Help me check that all placeholder text is gone in my Canva design.

Your post tells your story now. Next up, you'll download it as a polished image file and share it live on social media.

Download and Post to Social Media

Your Build & Brew post is fully customized. Every text field tells your story, and your photo makes it unmistakably yours.

A polished design sitting in Canva doesn't promote your chapter, though. You need to download it in the right format and pair it with a caption that tells people what Build & Brew is and how to join. The graphic catches their eye, but the caption is what converts a viewer into a new member.

In this step, get ready to:
  • Download your finished design as a PNG file.
  • Write a caption that promotes your Build & Brew chapter.
  • Post your graphic and caption live on social media.
Download your design as a PNG

Social media platforms compress every image you upload. Choosing the right file format before you download helps your text stay sharp after that compression.

  • Click the Share button in the top-right corner of the Canva editor.
  • Click Download.
  • In the File type dropdown, select PNG.
  • Click Download to save the file to your computer.

Why PNG instead of JPG?

PNG keeps text crisp and sharp on social media. JPG compresses images to reduce file size, but that compression can blur text and thin fonts.

Since your Build & Brew post is text-heavy, PNG is the better choice. Canva's own help center recommends downloading in PNG format for the best results when uploading to social media.

  • Check your downloads folder. You should see your Build & Brew post saved as a .png file.

Can't find your download?

Check your browser's default downloads folder. The file name will match your Canva design title.

If the download didn't start, make sure you clicked the final Download button after selecting PNG. The first Download option in the Share menu opens the format picker. The second Download button actually saves the file.

Still stuck? Help me find my downloaded Canva file.

Write your caption

Your graphic stops the scroll. The caption is what tells people what Build & Brew is and gets them to show up to your next session.

  • Open a notes app or text editor on your computer.
  • Write a hook about what your group built during the session. This is the first line people see, so make it specific and interesting.
  • Add a sentence explaining what Build & Brew is. For example: "Build & Brew is a weekly hands-on project group where we build real AI projects together."
  • Write a call to action inviting people to your next session.
  • Add relevant hashtags: #NextWork, #BuildAndBrew, and any campus-specific tags.

Lead with the build

Think about what would make someone who has never heard of Build & Brew want to show up. Lead with the most impressive or surprising thing your group built.

"We deployed an API in 47 minutes" hits harder than "Had a great time at our weekly meetup."

Post to social media

Your design is downloaded and your caption is ready. Time to put them together and go live.

  • Open your social media platform of choice: LinkedIn, Instagram, or X.
  • Create a new post.
  • Upload your PNG file from your downloads folder.
  • Paste your caption into the text field.
  • Review your post one more time before publishing.
  • Publish your post.

Before you check your profile, take a guess: will your graphic appear exactly as it looked in Canva, or will the platform crop or resize it?

  • Visit your profile on the platform you posted to. You should see your Build & Brew post live with your customized graphic and caption visible.

Did the platform crop your image?

Social media platforms compress uploaded images and limit resolution. Your post might look slightly different in a feed preview compared to Canva.

If any important text or your photo got cropped in the feed thumbnail, people can still see the full image by clicking on it. This is normal.

🙋‍♀️ Post not showing up?

Some platforms take a few seconds to process your image. Refresh your profile page and check again.

If the image looks blurry, double-check that you downloaded as PNG and not JPG. You can re-download from Canva without losing any of your edits.

Secret mission

Create the Other Variant for a Second Platform

You've posted your Build & Brew story on one platform, but different audiences scroll different feeds. Create the opposite background variant and post it to a second platform with a caption tailored to that platform's unique tone.

Clean Up Your Resources

Clean Up Your Resources

This project runs entirely on Canva Free and your web browser, so there are no ongoing costs. Decide whether to keep your resources for future Build & Brew sessions, tidy them up, or delete them entirely.

Resources you used:

  • Your personal copy of the Build & Brew template in Canva.
  • Your uploaded Build & Brew session photo in Canva Uploads.
  • Two downloaded PNG files on your computer (one per variant).
  • Live social media posts on one or two platforms.

Keep everything running

No action needed. Choose this if you plan to reuse the template after your next Build & Brew session.

  • Your Canva account is free with no ongoing costs. It stays active for future designs.
  • Your template copy stays in your Canva account. After your next Build & Brew session, you can open it and update the photo, headline, and story without starting from scratch.
  • Your downloaded PNG files remain on your computer for resharing or printing.
  • Your social media posts stay live, promoting your Build & Brew chapter to anyone who finds them.

Pause - I'll come back to this later

Everything in this project is free, so there are no costs to pause. Use this option to tidy up your files so they are easy to find when you come back.

  • Create a folder on your computer called Build-and-Brew-Posts and move both downloaded PNG files into it.
  • Your Canva template and account stay as they are. No action needed there.
  • Your social media posts stay live. You can always edit or remove them later from each platform.

Delete - I don't want to use this again

Remove all project resources. Your social media posts are your finished work, so only delete those if you no longer want them visible.

  • To delete your template copy, go to canva.com and find your Build & Brew design on the homepage. Click the three-dot menu on the design thumbnail and move it to the trash.
  • To remove your uploaded photo, open any design in the Canva editor. Click Uploads in the left sidebar, hover over your Build & Brew photo, click the three-dot menu on the image, and delete it.
  • Delete the two downloaded PNG files from your computer. On macOS, move them to the Trash. On Windows, right-click the files and select Delete.
  • To remove your social media posts, go to each platform, navigate to your post, and use the post's menu to delete it.
