How to build a meta skill for Claude
Build a meta skill that interviews you to create any new Claude skill.
Introduction
30 Second Summary
You know that feeling of explaining the same task to an AI for the fifth time? Your formatting rules, your constraints, your exact steps, all repeated from scratch every single conversation.
In this project, you will explore two existing skill approaches, then combine the best of both into your own meta-skill for Claude. The result is a personal skill factory that interviews you with rigorous, frontier-based questions and produces a ready-to-install skill file in minutes.
What You'll Build
You'll add Anthropic's built-in skill creator, upload Matt Pocock's open-source grilling skill to see a more rigorous interview technique, then fuse both approaches into your own meta skill that creates any skill you can imagine.
By the end of this project, you'll have:
- Two skills installed in Claude: Anthropic's built-in skill creator and Matt Pocock's grilling skill, each showing a different interview approach.
- A custom meta skill you built yourself that combines both approaches into a frontier-based skill factory.
- A repeatable process where you say "I want to create a skill" and Claude interviews you with the right questions, then produces a ready-to-upload skill file.
- Secret Mission: add starter templates so your meta skill can offer tailored patterns for productivity, engineering, and creative skills.
Do I need a paid Claude plan?
No. Skills work on all Claude plans, including Free. You just need a Claude account with code execution enabled in your settings.
Before We Start
Before we dive in, think about a skill you wish Claude already had. Something you explain to Claude over and over again, a repetitive task you'd love to hand off permanently.
Enable Skills in Claude
Claude skills are workflows that execute code behind the scenes to produce structured outputs like files, plans, and formatted documents. For them to work, your account needs code execution enabled.
In this step, you'll enable code execution, then add Anthropic's built-in skill creator from the Skills Directory. That gives you a working skill immediately with zero manual setup.
In this step, get ready to:
- Enable code execution in Claude settings.
- Add the built-in skill creator from the Skills Directory.
- Confirm both are active and ready to use.
Turn on code execution
- Open Claude.ai in your browser, or launch the Claude Desktop app.
- Click your name or initials in the bottom-left corner of the screen.
- Select Settings from the menu that appears.
- Click Capabilities in the Settings sidebar.
- Find Code execution and file creation and toggle it on.
The toggle should turn blue or show an enabled state.
Why does this matter?
Skills run code in a sandboxed environment to produce their outputs. Without this toggle, Claude can't execute the code that powers a skill, so uploaded skills appear greyed out and never trigger.
Confirm the Skills section is accessible
- Click Customize in the left sidebar.
- Click Skills.
You should see a Skills section with a + button visible at the top. The list may be empty, or it may show some Anthropic example skills.
Skills section not visible or greyed out?
If you don't see the Skills section, or skills appear greyed out, code execution wasn't fully enabled. Go back to Settings > Capabilities and confirm the Code execution and file creation toggle is on.
If you're on a Team or Enterprise plan, your organization owner may need to enable skills at the organization level first. Check with your admin if the toggle is missing entirely.
Having trouble?
Add the built-in skill creator from Browse
Anthropic ships a skill creator right in the Skills Directory. Instead of writing one from scratch, you can add it with one click.
- In the Skills section, click Browse.
- Find Skill Creator in the directory list.
- Click the + button next to it to add it to your skills.
- Confirm it now appears in your Skills list and is toggled on.
What is a skill creator?
This built-in skill teaches Claude how to generate new skills for you. When triggered, it interviews you about what you want, then produces a ready-to-use SKILL.md file. You'll use it later to build your own custom skill.
Your Claude account is set up with code execution and the built-in skill creator. Next, you'll add a second skill from Matt Pocock's open-source collection and see a different approach to interviewing.
Upload Matt Pocock's Grilling Skill
Add Matt Pocock's Grilling Skill
You have the built-in skill creator ready. It works, but it takes a fairly generic approach to interviewing you about your skill idea.
Matt Pocock, a developer known for his AI engineering workflows, published an open-source grilling skill that takes a different approach. It maps your idea as a "design tree" and asks questions in rounds, only unlocking the next set of questions after settling their prerequisites. In this step, you'll copy it from GitHub, paste it into Claude, and try it out.
In this step, get ready to:
- Copy Matt Pocock's grilling skill text from GitHub.
- Paste it into Claude using the Write skill instructions form.
- Trigger it and experience the design-tree interview.
Copy the grilling skill from GitHub
Matt Pocock's skills are open-source on GitHub. The one you want is called grilling and lives in his skills repository.
- Open Matt Pocock's grilling skill on GitHub in a new browser tab.
- Click the Raw button near the top-right of the file view.
- Select all the text on the page (Cmd+A on macOS or Ctrl+A on Windows).
- Copy it (Cmd+C on macOS or Ctrl+C on Windows).
Add the skill to Claude
- In Claude, click Customize in the left sidebar.
- Click Skills.
- Click the + button.
- Click + Create skill.
- Select Write skill instructions.
- In the Name field, type grilling.
- In the Description field, look at the text you copied. Find the description: line near the top (between the two --- markers). Copy that line's value and paste it here.
- In the Instructions field, paste everything you copied from GitHub.
- Click Create.
- Confirm the grilling skill appears in your Skills list and is toggled on.
What are the --- markers?
The text you copied starts with a section between two --- lines. This is called YAML frontmatter. It contains metadata like the skill's name and description. The rest of the file (after the second ---) is the actual instructions Claude follows when the skill triggers.
The Description field is the most important one to get right. Claude uses it to decide when your skill should activate. A vague description means the skill rarely fires.
Now trigger it. Start a brand new conversation and type something like:
I want to design a morning routine system that actually sticks
What do you think Claude will do differently compared to a normal response? Before you hit send, predict whether you'll see structured questions or a generic answer.
- Send your message.
Claude should respond with numbered frontier questions, each with a recommended answer. It's mapping your idea as a design tree, only asking questions whose prerequisites are already settled.
What is a design tree?
A design tree is a structure where every decision branches into the decisions that depend on it. The "frontier" is all the questions you can ask right now without guessing at answers you haven't heard yet. This prevents Claude from making assumptions about your idea.
- Answer a couple of rounds of questions to see how the interview progresses.
- Notice how each round unlocks new questions based on your answers.
Skill not triggering the interview?
Make sure you started a brand new conversation. Skills don't always activate in existing threads.
Go to Customize > Skills and verify the grilling skill is toggled on. If it's greyed out, check that code execution is still enabled in Settings > Capabilities.
Help me figure out why the grilling skill isn't triggering
You've now experienced two different skill approaches: the built-in creator and Matt Pocock's grilling interview. Next, you'll combine what you've learned and build your own meta skill from scratch.
Build Your Own Meta Skill
You've used Anthropic's built-in skill creator and experienced Matt Pocock's grilling approach. The built-in creator works but asks fairly generic questions. The grilling skill digs deeper with its design-tree frontier method, but it doesn't produce a skill file at the end.
Now you'll combine the best of both. You'll use the built-in skill creator to generate a meta skill that incorporates the grilling technique. The result is a skill that creates other skills through rigorous, frontier-based interviewing.
In this step, get ready to:
- Use the built-in skill creator to generate your meta skill.
- Upload and activate your new skill.
- Test it by creating a brand new skill through conversation.
Trigger the built-in skill creator
The built-in skill creator you added in Step 1 is your tool for generating this. You'll tell it what you want and let it interview you about the design.
- Start a brand new conversation in Claude.
- Type a message that triggers the skill creator. Tell it what you want to build:
I want to create a skill that creates other skills. It should interview the user using a design-tree approach where questions are asked in rounds based on a frontier - only asking questions whose prerequisites are already settled. After the interview, it should generate a complete SKILL.md file ready to upload.
- Send your message.
The built-in skill creator should launch its interview process, asking you questions about how your meta skill should work.
Answer the interview to shape your skill
This is where your experience with the grilling skill pays off. You've seen how frontier-based questioning works firsthand, so you can describe exactly what you want your skill to do.
- Answer each round of questions from the skill creator.
- When asked about the interview approach, describe the design-tree frontier method you experienced with the grilling skill.
- When asked about output format, specify that it should produce a complete SKILL.md file with YAML frontmatter.
- When asked about tone, specify that it should be relentless but give recommended answers for each question.
- Keep going until the skill creator summarizes the design and asks you to confirm.
- Confirm the design.
After you confirm, the skill creator generates a complete SKILL.md file as an artifact.
Upload and test your meta skill
- Download the generated SKILL.md artifact by clicking the download button on the artifact panel.
- On your Desktop, create a new folder with the exact name from the skill's frontmatter name field.
- Move the downloaded SKILL.md into that folder.
- Right-click the folder and select Compress (macOS) or Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder (Windows).
- In Claude, go to Customize > Skills, click +, click + Create skill, select Upload a skill, and choose your zip file.
- Confirm your new meta skill appears in the Skills list and is toggled on.
Time to test it. Before you do, think about what skill you want to create.
- Start a brand new conversation in Claude.
- Tell Claude you want to create a skill. Pick something you'd actually use, like a meal planner, a code reviewer, or a meeting summariser.
- Go through the interview. Notice whether your meta skill asks frontier-based questions in rounds.
- Confirm the design when you're satisfied.
- Verify that it produces a complete SKILL.md file ready to upload.
Meta skill not using the grilling approach?
If your skill asks flat questions instead of using the design-tree frontier method, the skill creator may not have captured that approach strongly enough. Try editing your SKILL.md to be more explicit about the frontier-based rounds, then re-upload.
Help me improve my meta skill so it uses frontier-based questioning
Secret mission
Add Starter Templates
Your skill-creator currently treats every skill the same. But a productivity skill has very different patterns than an engineering skill or a creative skill. Add reference templates so your skill-creator can offer tailored starter patterns based on what the user wants to build.

What about on Windows?
If you're on Windows, open File Explorer, navigate to your Desktop, and delete the grilling folder, grilling.zip, and any other skill folders or zips you created.
Nice Work!
Nice Work!
You just built a meta skill for Claude by combining two existing approaches into something better than either alone. You now have a personal skill factory that creates other skills through rigorous, frontier-based interviewing.
You've learned how to:
- Use Anthropic's built-in skill creator and Matt Pocock's open-source grilling skill to understand two different approaches to AI-assisted skill building.
- Build a custom meta skill that combines both approaches into a frontier-based design-tree interview that produces ready-to-upload skill files.
- Master the anatomy of a skill: a folder containing a SKILL.md file with YAML frontmatter and markdown instructions, zipped and uploaded through the Skills UI.
- Secret Mission: added starter templates so your meta skill offers tailored patterns for productivity, engineering, and creative skills.
