Animate a Social Promo in After Effects
Create and render a 10-second vertical social promo with smooth text animation.
Introduction
30 Second Summary
Social posts get only a moment to earn attention. A clear message can still disappear when every element sits still.
In this project, you will build a bold 10-second vertical promo in Adobe After Effects. The project takes you from a static design to smooth animation and a playable video export.
What You'll Build
Press play on your finished vertical promo to watch each message arrive in sequence with smooth motion that draws attention to the final call-to-action.
By the end of this project, you'll have:
- A bold vertical promo you can preview as a complete 10-second animation inside After Effects.
- An editable layered design you can restyle for another social campaign.
- A linear-to-eased motion comparison you can play to show how acceleration and deceleration make an entrance feel smoother.
- A shareable video encoded with H.264 that you can play outside After Effects.
- Secret Mission: Add a smoothly pulsing accent that draws attention to the call-to-action.
Are there any prerequisites?
You need an installed and activated copy of Adobe After Effects on a compatible Windows 11 PC. This project is designed for complete beginners.
Before We Start
Before the hands-on work begins, this step locks in the single message your 10-second vertical promo needs to communicate. Your promotion topic gives the design a focus. Your viewer call-to-action gives the animation a purpose.
Set Up Your Promo Project
A clear promo brief gives your 10-second video a purpose. A predictable folder structure gives every editable file and render a known home.
In this step, you will create that structure in Windows 11 File Explorer. You will save a blank Adobe After Effects project inside it before any design work begins.
In this step, get ready to:
- Create a dedicated project folder with an empty output subfolder.
- Save a blank Adobe After Effects project as beginner-social-promo.aep.
Create the project folders
The main folder keeps your editable project beside its future render destination. This structure makes the finished video easy to find later.
- Press the Windows key to open the search bar.
- Enter File Explorer in the search field.
- Press Enter to open File Explorer.
You will see File Explorer open with your local folders in the left sidebar.
- Select your Desktop location from the left sidebar.
- Select the new-folder control in the toolbar.
- Enter After-Effects-Beginner-Promo as the folder name.
You should see After-Effects-Beginner-Promo on your Desktop.
- Double-click After-Effects-Beginner-Promo to enter the folder.
- Select the new-folder control in the toolbar.
- Enter output as the subfolder name.
You should now see an empty output folder inside After-Effects-Beginner-Promo.
What Do These Folders Hold?
The beginner-social-promo.aep file holds the editable project. The output folder keeps the rendered video separate from that project.
Save the blank project
Saving before you begin designing gives the project a stable name and location. Every later change now belongs to the same project file.
- Press the Windows key to open the search bar.
- Enter Adobe After Effects in the search field.
- Press Enter to launch Adobe After Effects.
You will see the Adobe After Effects start screen after the application finishes loading.
- Create a blank project from the start screen.
- Use Adobe After Effects' save controls to save the blank project inside After-Effects-Beginner-Promo as beginner-social-promo.
The blank project remains open in Adobe After Effects. Its saved file name is beginner-social-promo.aep.
Before you check, which two items do you expect to find together inside After-Effects-Beginner-Promo?
- Switch back to Windows 11 File Explorer.
- Double-click the output folder.
You should see an empty folder. This confirms that the render destination is ready for the finished video.
- Return to After-Effects-Beginner-Promo using the folder path above the file list.
- Confirm that beginner-social-promo.aep appears beside the output folder.
You should see the saved project file beside the empty render folder. Adobe After Effects stays open with the same project loaded.
Project File Missing?
- Save the project again inside After-Effects-Beginner-Promo if beginner-social-promo.aep does not appear there.
- Move any unrelated files outside output if that folder is not empty.
- Help me troubleshoot saving my After Effects project.
That is the groundwork done: your editable project is saved beside the folder that will hold the final video. Next, you will turn the blank project into a complete vertical poster.
Build a Static Social Promo
Your saved Adobe After Effects project is ready beside its output folder.
Motion can only support a message that already reads clearly as a still frame. This step builds a vertical poster with a clear visual hierarchy before anything moves.
In this step, get ready to:
- Configure the vertical Social Promo composition.
- Build the poster's color structure with editable layers.
- Arrange the message into a clear visual hierarchy.
Create the vertical composition
A composition sets the frame size plus the timing for every layer inside it. These settings create a ten-second canvas designed for vertical viewing.
- Select Composition in the top menu.
- Select New Composition.
You'll see the settings used to define the new composition.
- Name the composition Social Promo.
- Set Width to 1080.
The settings now identify the composition plus its vertical frame width.
- Set Height to 1920.
- Set Frame Rate to 30.
The frame dimensions now describe a tall canvas running at 30 frames per second.
- Set Duration to 10 seconds.
- Confirm the settings to create the composition.
You'll see a tall blank frame in the Composition panel.
Build the poster backdrop
A full-frame solid gives the poster a consistent background. Separate shape layers keep both accents individually editable.
Why build with native layers?
Motion Graphics templates expose controls for reusable graphics. Native text, solid, plus shape layers show you how every visual piece is built.
That structure keeps the poster editable when you animate it later.
- Select Layer in the top menu.
- Select New.
You'll see the available layer types.
- Select Solid.
- Choose a background color that keeps your planned text readable.
The solid settings now show your chosen background color.
- Confirm the solid settings to create the background layer.
The Composition panel now shows a full-frame background color.
- Click an empty area in the Timeline panel to clear the layer selection.
- Select the Rectangle tool in the top toolbar.
The rectangle control is now active without another layer selected.
- Use the shape options in the top toolbar to choose an accent color that contrasts with the background.
- Drag in the Composition panel to draw a rectangle near one edge of the planned text area.
You'll see the first accent as its own shape layer above the background.
- Click an empty area in the Timeline panel to clear the shape selection.
- Choose another accent color that contrasts with the first shape plus the background.
The shape options now carry the second accent color.
- Drag in the Composition panel to draw a second rectangle near the opposite edge of the planned text area.
- Save the open beginner-social-promo.aep project.
You'll see a background plus two contrasting rectangles. Each accent remains editable on its own shape layer.
Did the rectangle attach to another layer?
Clear the selected layer in the Timeline panel before drawing each rectangle. This allows After Effects to create a separate shape layer.
Help me understand why my rectangle did not become a separate shape layer.
Add the message hierarchy
Text size plus placement control the order in which viewers read the message. The headline should lead before the tagline supports it.
- Select the Type tool in the top toolbar.
- Click in the central area of the Composition panel at the intended headline position.
You'll see a text insertion point where the headline begins.
- Type a short headline that names your promotion.
The headline now appears as an editable text layer.
- Click below the headline to start another text layer.
- Type a short tagline that supports the main message.
The tagline now gives the headline a supporting detail.
- Click in the lower part of the poster to start the final text layer.
- Type the call-to-action you defined earlier.
You now have separate headline, tagline, plus call-to-action text layers.
- Use the top toolbar to switch from text editing to layer selection.
- Use the text formatting controls to make the headline the largest text layer.
The headline now carries the strongest visual weight.
- Format the tagline at a smaller size than the headline.
- Format the call-to-action at a size that remains clearly readable.
The three text sizes now create a clear reading order.
- Move the headline into the poster's primary focal area.
- Position the tagline close to the headline.
The main message now reads as one connected group.
- Position the call-to-action with clear space around it.
- Reposition the rectangle accents so they frame the message without covering any text.
The accents now guide attention toward the message while every word stays visible.
- Save the open beginner-social-promo.aep project.
Before you check the finished frame, which text layer do you expect your eye to notice first?
- Check the finished still by moving the Timeline panel to the five-second mark.
At the five-second mark, you'll see a complete vertical poster with its background plus two contrasting accent shapes. The headline, tagline, plus call-to-action will read in that order.
Is the poster hard to read?
Increase the contrast between the text plus its background. Move any accent shape that crosses the letterforms.
Help me diagnose my promo's visual hierarchy.
Your first complete frame is ready. Next, you'll turn the headline plus call-to-action into moving elements.
Animate the Promo With Linear Keyframes
Your static poster already gives the promotion a clear visual hierarchy. Motion now needs to guide the viewer through that message.
In this step, Adobe After Effects uses keyframes to record property values at specific moments. You will use deliberately linear interpolation to create a timing baseline you can evaluate.
In this step, get ready to:
- Create a sliding headline entrance with Position and Opacity keyframes.
- Stagger the call-to-action entrance so it begins later.
- Preview the default linear timing inside the Social Promo composition.
Animate the headline entrance
The headline needs a readable resting position before it can enter the frame. You will capture that finished state first.
- Select the text layer containing your headline in the Timeline panel.
- Move the current-time indicator to the two-second mark.
- Expand Transform for the selected headline layer.
You will see the layer properties that control the headline's location and visibility.
- Activate the stopwatch beside Position.
- Activate the stopwatch beside Opacity.
The Timeline now shows one finish keyframe for each property. Those keyframes preserve the headline's readable position at two seconds.
- Move the current-time indicator to the one-second mark.
- Drag the headline to the left in the Composition panel until it sits outside its resting position.
Moving the headline creates an earlier Position keyframe. The layer now has a starting location plus a finish location.
- Set the headline's Opacity value to 0%.
A new Opacity keyframe appears at one second. The headline now begins invisible before becoming fully readable.
What Do These Keyframes Store?
- The starting Position keyframe stores the headline's off-position location.
- The finish Position keyframe stores its readable resting location.
- The Opacity keyframes control how the headline becomes visible during the entrance.
- Drag the current-time indicator halfway between one second and two seconds.
You will see the headline partway between its start position and finish position. It will also be partially visible.
- Save beginner-social-promo.aep.
Missing a Headline Keyframe?
Make sure each stopwatch remains active before changing the earlier value. Changing a property with an inactive stopwatch updates the layer without creating another keyframe.
Ask for help checking why your headline keyframes are missing.
Delay the call-to-action entrance
The call-to-action should follow the headline instead of competing with it. A later pair of keyframes creates that separation.
- Select the text layer containing your call-to-action in the Timeline panel.
- Move the current-time indicator to the three-second mark.
- Expand Transform for the selected call-to-action layer.
Three seconds becomes the finished state for the call-to-action. Its current position remains the readable resting position from your poster.
- Activate the stopwatch beside Position.
- Activate the stopwatch beside Opacity.
You will see one finish keyframe beside each property at three seconds.
- Move the current-time indicator to the two-second mark.
- Drag the call-to-action below its resting position in the Composition panel.
The new Position keyframe gives the call-to-action a lower starting location.
- Set the call-to-action's Opacity value to 0%.
The call-to-action now starts one second after the headline. Its entrance finishes at three seconds.
- Drag the current-time indicator halfway between two seconds and three seconds.
You will see the call-to-action between its lower starting point and final resting position. It will also be partially visible.
- Save beginner-social-promo.aep.
Does the Call-to-Action Appear Too Early?
Check that its starting keyframes sit at two seconds. The headline's starting keyframes should remain at one second.
Ask for help checking the timing of both entrances.
Preview the linear timing
Both animated layers now have starting values plus finishing values. The full preview reveals how After Effects travels between each pair.
- Move the current-time indicator to the beginning of the Social Promo composition.
Before you preview, do you think the entrances will feel natural at their starts and stops?
- Preview the composition by pressing the Spacebar.
You will see the headline move first at a uniform rate. The call-to-action follows with the same uniform movement.
Both elements start abruptly. Both elements also stop abruptly.
What Did Linear Timing Reveal?
Linear interpolation changes each animated value at a uniform rate between keyframes. That steady rate gives both entrances a stiff rhythm.
This mechanical shortfall is intentional. You now have a clear baseline for judging the motion.
- Save beginner-social-promo.aep after completing the preview.
You have turned the static poster into a working motion graphic. Next, you will reshape its timing so each entrance accelerates and settles smoothly.
Smooth the Motion With Easing
Your headline and call-to-action now reach the right places. The last preview exposed their uniform movement.
Adobe After Effects can vary motion speed around keyframes with Easy Ease. This softens the sudden changes at each endpoint.
The Graph Editor gives you finer control over each Position curve. You will push more of the movement into the middle of each entrance.
In this step, get ready to:
- Apply Easy Ease to the headline and call-to-action keyframes.
- Refine both Position curves in the Graph Editor.
- Preview the smooth acceleration and deceleration.
Apply Easy Ease to both layers
Linear interpolation spreads each value change at a uniform rate. Easy Ease varies that rate near the selected keyframes while preserving their timing.
- In the Timeline panel, expand the headline layer's Transform properties.
- Expand the call-to-action layer's Transform properties.
- Drag a selection box around every visible Position keyframe plus every visible Opacity keyframe for both layers.
- Right-click one of the selected keyframes.
- Choose Keyframe Assistant from the menu.
- Choose Easy Ease.
- Preview both entrances by pressing Spacebar.
You should see less abrupt movement around the starting keyframes. Each layer should also settle more gently at its final keyframe.
Still Seeing Abrupt Motion?
- Confirm that every Position and Opacity keyframe was selected before you chose Easy Ease.
- Check that the call-to-action keyframes remain later than the headline keyframes.
Help me check why my Easy Ease animation still looks abrupt.
Refine the headline Position curve
Easy Ease creates a general speed change automatically. The Position curve lets you control how long the headline spends accelerating into its entrance.
The direction handles can be fiddly to select because they sit directly beside each keyframe. A small drag is enough to reshape the motion.
- Select the headline layer's Position property in the Timeline panel.
- Select the Graph Editor button in the Timeline panel.
- Select the starting Position keyframe in the graph.
- Drag its outgoing direction handle away from the keyframe to create a gradual departure.
- Select the final Position keyframe in the graph.
- Drag its incoming direction handle away from the keyframe to create a gradual arrival.
- Select the Graph Editor button to return to the Timeline view.
- Preview the headline entrance by pressing Spacebar.
You should see the headline leave its starting position gently. Its movement should become faster through the middle.
The headline should settle into its readable final position without an abrupt stop.
How Does the Curve Change the Motion?
The gentler ends give the headline time to accelerate from rest. The steeper middle moves it across the frame more quickly.
The final gentle section slows the headline before it reaches its resting position. The motion now has a deliberate rhythm.
Cannot See the Direction Handles?
- Confirm that the headline layer's Position property is selected before entering the Graph Editor.
- Select an eased Position keyframe in the graph to reveal its direction handle.
Help me find the Position direction handles in the Graph Editor.
Refine the call-to-action and compare
The call-to-action needs the same speed pattern while keeping its later entrance. Refining its own Position curve preserves the sequence you already built.
- Select the call-to-action layer's Position property in the Timeline panel.
- Select the Graph Editor button.
- Select the starting Position keyframe in the graph.
- Drag its outgoing direction handle away from the keyframe to soften the departure.
- Select the final Position keyframe in the graph.
- Drag its incoming direction handle away from the keyframe to soften the arrival.
- Select the Graph Editor button to return to the Timeline view.
- Save your changes to beginner-social-promo.aep.
Before you preview the full composition, do you expect the elements to keep a uniform speed or change speed during each entrance?
- Preview the full Social Promo composition by pressing Spacebar.
Both layers should begin their entrances gently. Their movement should become faster through the middle.
Each layer should decelerate as it reaches its readable final position. The abrupt starts and stops from the previous preview are gone.
Does the Full Preview Still Feel Mechanical?
- Check that both layers have Easy Ease applied to every Position and Opacity keyframe.
- Confirm that each Position curve has a gentle beginning plus a gentle ending.
- Verify that the call-to-action still starts later than the headline.
Help me diagnose why my eased text animation still feels mechanical.
That is a real motion-graphics upgrade. Your text entrances now accelerate with purpose before settling smoothly.
Next, you will polish the sequence. Then you will render the finished promo as a playable video.
Polish and Export the Promo
The motion already feels smooth inside Adobe After Effects. A polished promo also needs a clear order for viewers to follow.
Now you will sequence the three text layers to guide attention through the message. You will export the finished composition as a video that plays outside the project.
In this step, get ready to:
- Sequence the message so each text layer enters in visual order.
- Configure the Render Queue for an H.264 video.
- Verify the exported promo in Windows 11 File Explorer.
Sequence the message
A viewer can absorb one main message at a time. Staggered layer start times create a hierarchy that leads from the headline to the final action.
- Select the Graph Editor button if the graph is still visible.
- Place the playhead at the beginning of the Social Promo composition in the Timeline panel.
- Leave the headline layer at the beginning of the composition.
- Drag the tagline layer bar to the right until it begins after the headline starts.
- Drag the call-to-action layer bar farther to the right so it begins after the tagline.
- Save beginner-social-promo.aep.
Before you preview, predict the order in which the three text layers will appear.
- Press Spacebar to preview the full composition.
You should see the headline first. The tagline follows before the call-to-action lands last.
Good work. Your animation now reveals the message in a deliberate order.
Configure the H.264 render
The Render Queue converts your editable composition into a separate movie file. The H.264 output gives you a video that can play outside After Effects.
- Click Composition in the top menu.
- Select Add To Render Queue.
- Select the underlined setting beside Output Module in the Render Queue panel.
- Choose H.264 as the output movie's file format.
- Apply the output module settings using the dialog's confirmation control.
Why Use the Render Queue?
The Render Queue uses an embedded version of Adobe Media Encoder for most movie formats.
This approach creates the H.264 file without requiring you to switch to a separate application.
- Select the text beside Output To in the Render Queue panel.
- Open the After-Effects-Beginner-Promo folder in the file dialog.
- Open the output folder.
- Enter social-promo.mp4 as the file name.
- Confirm the file name and destination.
Back in the Render Queue panel, you should see H.264 as the output format. The destination should end with After-Effects-Beginner-Promo/output/social-promo.mp4.
Render Settings Look Wrong?
- Reopen the underlined Output Module setting if the format does not show H.264.
- Confirm the Output To destination ends with After-Effects-Beginner-Promo/output/social-promo.mp4.
- Ask for help with checking the Render Queue settings.
Render and verify the video
Rendering writes the finished composition into the movie file you configured. Expect a short wait while After Effects processes the frames.
Before you render, predict which status will confirm that the movie file is complete.
- Select the Render button in the upper-right corner of the Render Queue panel.
After Effects processes the composition. You should see the Render Queue item change its status to Done when the export finishes.
Render Not Reaching Done?
- Confirm the output destination still points to the project's output folder.
- Confirm no other application is using an earlier copy of social-promo.mp4.
- Ask for help with a Render Queue item that does not finish.
- Press the Windows key to open the search bar.
- Type File Explorer and press Enter.
- Return to the After-Effects-Beginner-Promo folder from earlier.
- Open the output folder.
Before you play the file, predict whether the final timing will preserve the hierarchy you saw inside After Effects.
- Double-click social-promo.mp4 to play the rendered video.
You should see the complete 10-second vertical promo play from beginning to end. The headline leads before the tagline and call-to-action complete the sequence.
That completes the delivery loop. Your editable project now has a playable social-promo.mp4 beside it.
Video Not Playing Correctly?
- Confirm the Render Queue item shows Done.
- Open social-promo.mp4 from the project's output folder.
- Ask for help with a rendered promo that does not play correctly.
Secret mission
Add a Pulsing Accent
Add a three-beat ellipse pulse beside the call-to-action. You will build it with Scale keyframes so the accent draws attention without covering the message.
Clean Up Your Resources
Clean Up Your Resources
Your Adobe After Effects project and rendered video stay on your Windows PC without adding any ongoing cost beyond your existing subscription or license. Decide whether to keep them, pause your work, or remove the After-Effects-Beginner-Promo folder with Windows 11 File Explorer.
Resources you used:
- The local After-Effects-Beginner-Promo folder containing every project resource.
- The editable After-Effects-Beginner-Promo/beginner-social-promo.aep project containing the complete Social Promo composition.
- The After-Effects-Beginner-Promo/output folder for rendered videos.
- The rendered H.264 video at After-Effects-Beginner-Promo/output/social-promo.mp4.
The editable project already contains the pulsing accent. The existing social-promo.mp4 contains the pre-bonus version unless you rendered Social Promo again.
Keep everything running
No action is needed. Choose this if you want to revise the promo or create another render later.
- Leave the After-Effects-Beginner-Promo folder in its current location.
- Open beginner-social-promo.aep in Adobe After Effects whenever you want to revise the copy, colours, timing, or pulsing accent.
- Keep the existing social-promo.mp4 if you want to preserve the pre-bonus render.
- Render Social Promo again whenever you want the video to include the pulsing accent.
Pause - I'll come back to this later
Pausing means closing Adobe After Effects while leaving every local file in place. Your project adds no cloud cost while it waits.
- Save beginner-social-promo.aep in Adobe After Effects.
- Close Adobe After Effects.
- Leave After-Effects-Beginner-Promo in its current location.
- Return later by opening beginner-social-promo.aep from Windows 11 File Explorer.
Your editable composition remains intact. Your current social-promo.mp4 also remains playable outside Adobe After Effects.
Delete - I don't want to use this again
Remove all local project resources if you no longer want to edit or share this promo. The editable project and rendered video are both stored inside After-Effects-Beginner-Promo.
