ChatGPT Prompting Hack

Master prompt engineering to get better ChatGPT results every time.

Introduction

30 Second Summary

Everyone has typed a quick question into ChatGPT and gotten back a response that was too generic, too long, or completely off the mark. The difference between people who get great results and people who don't almost always comes down to how they ask.

In this project, you will learn two techniques that turn rough ideas into polished prompts: a structured framework, and a method for letting ChatGPT rewrite your prompts for you (meta-prompting).

What You'll Build

Picture yourself opening ChatGPT with a rough idea, spending 30 seconds shaping it, and getting back a response you can use without editing.

By the end of this project, you'll have:

  • A structured prompting framework (Goal, Context, Output, and Boundaries) that tells ChatGPT exactly what to do, what to know, what to produce, and what to avoid.
  • A meta-prompting technique where you give ChatGPT a rough idea and it asks clarifying questions, then rewrites your prompt for you.
  • Secret Mission: Turn your meta-prompting template into a macOS keyboard shortcut so you can trigger it instantly from any text field.

Do I need any experience with ChatGPT?

A free ChatGPT account is all you need. Familiarity with basic ChatGPT usage from the Personalize Your ChatGPT project is helpful but not required.

Before We Start

Before we dive in, let's lock in what you're about to build and why it matters to you.

Naming your goal now gives every step a clear target to aim for.

Structure Your Prompt

Most people type a short, vague request into ChatGPT and accept whatever comes back. The result is generic filler that needs heavy editing before you can use it.

The fix is a four-part framework: Goal, Context, Output, and Boundaries. In this step, you will pick a real task and write one structured prompt that covers all four.

In this step, get ready to:
  • Pick a real recurring task to use throughout this project.
  • Write and send a structured prompt using Goal, Context, Output, and Boundaries.

Resume

Update my resume with my latest experiences.

None of these fit? Bring your own. Any task you'd normally spend time writing, organizing, or figuring out works.

  • Open ChatGPT in your browser at chatgpt.com and sign in.
Write and send your structured prompt
  • Click New chat in the ChatGPT sidebar to start a fresh conversation.
  • Write your Goal first. State what ChatGPT should do in one clear sentence.
  • Add your Context below the Goal. Include the specific details ChatGPT needs about your situation.
  • Add your Output requirements. Specify the length, tone, and structure you want back.
  • Add your Boundaries. Tell ChatGPT what to avoid, what to leave unchanged, or what assumptions not to make.

What are Goal, Context, Output, and Boundaries?

Goal: What do you want ChatGPT to do? State the task clearly and specifically.

Context: What background information or sources will help ChatGPT get it right?

Output: What format, length, or level of detail do you need back?

Boundaries: What should ChatGPT avoid, leave unchanged, or check with you before acting on?

Before you send your prompt, compare it against a worked example.

✔️ I'll give it a go!

Review your prompt to make sure it covers all four parts: Goal, Context, Output, and Boundaries. When you're happy with it, press Enter to send.

ⓧ Let me check my work

Here's a sample structured prompt for the resume task. Compare your prompt against it to make sure you've covered all four parts.

Goal: Update my resume to include my most recent role
and make it stronger for product management positions.

Context: I'm a project coordinator with 2 years of
experience at a fintech startup. I was recently promoted
to senior project coordinator and started leading
cross-functional launches. My current resume still lists
my old title and doesn't mention the launches I led or
the tools I used (Jira, Confluence, Figma).

Output: Rewrite just the experience section for this
role. Use bullet points that start with action verbs.
Keep each bullet to one line. Match a clean, modern
resume tone.

Boundaries: Don't invent metrics or accomplishments I
didn't mention. Don't rewrite sections outside the
experience section. Keep my original job title wording
exact — don't rephrase it.

Your prompt doesn't need to match this word for word. The key is that each section gives ChatGPT something specific to work with, not vague instructions like "make it good." When you're ready, press Enter to send.

Read through the response. It should be specific, tailored to your situation, and close to something you can use without heavy editing.

Response still feels generic?

Check that your Context includes details specific to your situation, not just a restatement of the task. Check that your Boundaries name specific things to avoid, not vague instructions like "make it good."

Help me make my structured prompt more specific.

  • Before moving on, copy the structured prompt you sent. Hover over your message in ChatGPT and click the copy button, or select the text and press Cmd+C (macOS) or Ctrl+C (Windows).

Your structured prompt produces a solid response. Next up, you will let ChatGPT rewrite your prompts for you so you can skip the manual work entirely.

Let ChatGPT Write Your Prompts

Your structured prompt produces a solid response, but writing it took effort. You had to think about every section yourself.

In this step, you will learn meta-prompting: give ChatGPT a rough idea and let it ask clarifying questions, then rewrite your prompt for you.

What is meta-prompting?

Meta-prompting is when you use ChatGPT to write or improve your prompt. Instead of spending five minutes crafting the perfect request, you describe what you need in plain language and let ChatGPT do the structuring.

In this step, get ready to:
  • Use a meta-prompting template to get ChatGPT to improve your prompt.
  • Answer ChatGPT's clarifying questions and test the rewritten prompt.
Ask ChatGPT to improve your prompt
  • Click New chat in the ChatGPT sidebar.
  • Paste the following meta-prompting request into the message box. Replace the placeholder with the structured prompt you copied in the last step:
Help me improve this prompt. First, ask up to three questions that would make the result more useful. Then rewrite the prompt using Goal, Context, Output, and Boundaries.

[[YOUR_PROMPT="paste your current best prompt with boundaries here"]]

What does this message do?

It asks ChatGPT to identify what is missing from your prompt by asking you clarifying questions, then rewrite the prompt using the same Goal, Context, Output, and Boundaries framework.

  • Press Enter to send the message.

ChatGPT should respond with one to three clarifying questions. These questions reveal context you forgot to include and assumptions you did not realize you were making.

ChatGPT rewrote the prompt without asking questions?

Sometimes ChatGPT skips the questions and jumps straight to rewriting. If this happens, send a follow-up message like: "Before we finalize, what are three questions you would ask to make this prompt even more useful?"

  • Read each question carefully.
  • Type your answers in a single reply. Be specific with each answer rather than giving one-word responses.
  • Press Enter to send your answers.
  • Read through the rewritten prompt ChatGPT produced.
  • Select the rewritten prompt text and press Cmd+C (macOS) or Ctrl+C (Windows) to copy it.
  • Click New chat in the ChatGPT sidebar.
  • Paste the rewritten prompt into the message box and press Enter to send it.

Secret mission

Turn Your Meta-Prompt Into a Hotkey

You have a powerful meta-prompting template, but copying and pasting it every time you want to improve a prompt is slow. What if you could type a short keyword and have macOS instantly expand it into the full template, anywhere on your computer?

Clean Up Your Resources

Clean Up Your Resources

This project runs entirely in ChatGPT's free tier, so there are no ongoing costs. Decide whether to keep your conversations, organize them for later, or delete them entirely.

Resources you used:

  • ChatGPT conversations created during this project (baseline, structured prompts, meta-prompting, and secret mission).
  • macOS Text Replacement created during the secret mission (if completed).

Keep everything running

No action needed. Choose this if you plan to revisit your prompts or continue refining them.

  • Your conversations stay in your ChatGPT account at no cost.
  • Your macOS Text Replacement shortcut stays active across all apps until you remove it.

Pause - I'll come back to this later

Organize your work so it is easy to find when you return.

  • Rename your project conversations in the ChatGPT sidebar with clear labels (for example, "Prompt Engineering - Baseline" or "Prompt Engineering - Meta-Prompting") so you can locate them quickly later.
  • Your macOS Text Replacement persists automatically. No action needed for that.

Delete - I don't want to use this again

Remove your project conversations and shortcuts.

  • In ChatGPT, hover over each project conversation in the sidebar to reveal the options menu.
  • Delete each conversation you no longer need.
  • To remove your Text Replacement, open System Settings, click Keyboard, then click Text Replacements. Select the /imp entry and click the - button to remove it.

That's a Wrap!

That's a Wrap!

Nice work! You just went from typing one-line prompts and hoping for the best to writing structured, boundary-aware prompts that consistently produce high-quality results.

You have a framework you can apply to any task you throw at ChatGPT, and a meta-prompting technique that does the hard work for you.

You learned how to:

  • Structure any prompt using the Goal, Context, Output, and Boundaries framework to eliminate guesswork and produce specific, usable results on the first try.
  • Use meta-prompting to let ChatGPT help you write and improve your own prompts, catching gaps and assumptions you missed.
  • Secret Mission: Turned your meta-prompting template into a macOS keyboard shortcut you can trigger from any text field, anywhere.
