Turn Kid's Art into a Keepsake Book
Design a multi-page photo book of your child's artwork in Canva.
Introduction
30 Second Summary
Kids create artwork constantly, but most of it ends up crumpled in a drawer or quietly recycled. There is no easy way to preserve a growing pile of paintings, drawings, and journal pages.
In this project, you will photograph your child's artwork and turn it into a polished photo book using Canva. You can download the finished book as a free PDF or order a printed hardcover delivered to your door.
What You'll Build
You will flip through a complete digital book where each page showcases one of your child's creations with a caption, date, and the story behind it.
By the end of this project, you'll have:
- A set of clean, print-quality digital photos of your child's physical artwork, captured with your phone using proper lighting and framing.
- A multi-page photo book in Canva where each art piece gets its own page with a polished background, caption, and date.
- A custom-designed cover and a downloadable print-ready PDF you can share with family, print at home, or order as a hardcover through Canva Print.
- An optional Secret Mission to take your book even further.
Are there any prerequisites?
You will need a free Canva account, an iPhone or smartphone with a camera, and 5-10 pieces of your child's physical artwork. Gather the art you want to feature before you start.
Before We Start
Before we dive in, let's lock in what you're about to build and why it matters. Picking the right artwork and choosing a theme now will make your book feel intentional instead of random.
Photograph Your Kid's Artwork
Your child's artwork lives on paper right now. For it to become a page in a printed keepsake book, each piece needs to be captured as a clean, high-quality digital photo.
A quick phone snap in dim lighting will look washed out and shadowy on a printed page. In this step, you will set up a simple photo station with natural light and capture each piece of art from the right angle.
In this step, get ready to:
- Set up a photo station with natural light and a white background.
- Photograph each piece of artwork from directly overhead.
- Review your photos and transfer them to your Mac.
Set up a simple photo station
The biggest factor in a good artwork photo is lighting. Natural window light gives even, neutral-toned illumination that keeps your child's colors looking true to life.
- Find a spot near a window where natural light is strong and even.
- Lay a white sheet or a piece of white poster board flat on a table or the floor.
- Place one piece of artwork on the white surface as a test.
- Turn off any overhead lights in the room.
Look at your test piece on the white surface. You should see even lighting across the artwork with no harsh shadows on any side.
Why turn off the overhead lights?
Overhead room lights compete with the window light and cast yellow-toned shadows across your artwork. With only natural light from the window, your photos will have accurate colors and soft, even illumination.
Seeing a shadow on one side of the artwork?
- Rotate the artwork or table so the window light falls more evenly across the surface.
- If the sunlight is too direct and creating a hard shadow, hang a thin white curtain or tape a sheet of white paper over the window to diffuse the light.
- How can I improve the lighting for photographing artwork at home?
Photograph each piece of artwork
With your station ready, it is time to capture each piece. The key is holding your phone directly above the artwork, not at an angle.
- Place the first piece of artwork flat on the white background.
- Stand directly above the artwork and hold your iPhone parallel to the surface, facing straight down.
- Frame the shot so the entire piece is visible with a small border of white showing on all four sides.
- Tap the artwork in your camera viewfinder to set the focus.
- Hold steady and take the photo.
Open the photo you just took in your camera roll. The artwork should be sharp, evenly lit, and fully in frame with vibrant colors.
Why shoot from directly overhead?
Shooting at an angle creates perspective distortion. The bottom of the artwork looks larger than the top, and the proportions come out wrong. Holding your phone directly above and parallel to the surface keeps the artwork square and true to its real dimensions.
- Repeat this process for each remaining piece of artwork.
- For journal pages, photograph them the same way, keeping the page flat and making sure the text is readable.
Steady hands make sharper photos
Rest your elbows on the table or brace against your knees if you are kneeling on the floor. Tap the shutter button gently instead of jabbing it to reduce camera shake.
Review and transfer your photos
Before these photos go into your book, each one needs to pass a quick quality check. Small issues like a dark corner or a tilted piece are easy to retake now but impossible to fix in print.
- Open the Photos app on your iPhone and scroll through the artwork photos you just took.
- For each photo, check: Is the art fully in frame? Is the lighting even with no harsh shadows? Are the colors vibrant and true to the original?
- Retake any photo that looks crooked, dark, or blurry.
Before you do a final count, predict: how many of your photos do you think passed the quality check on the first try?
- Count your final set of keeper photos. You should have 5-10 clean, well-lit photos with white or neutral backgrounds and no visible shadows.
Now transfer the photos to your Mac so they are ready to upload to Canva. AirDrop is the fastest way to move photos between your iPhone and Mac.
- Select all of your artwork photos in the Photos app.
- Tap the Share button (the square with an arrow pointing up).
- Tap AirDrop.
- Select your Mac from the AirDrop list to begin the transfer.
What is AirDrop?
AirDrop is Apple's wireless file transfer feature. It sends photos, files, and links between Apple devices over Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. Both your iPhone and Mac need to have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth turned on for it to work.
Open Finder on your Mac and check your Downloads folder. You should see all of your artwork photos there, ready to upload to Canva.
Don't see your Mac in AirDrop?
- Make sure both your iPhone and Mac are on the same Wi-Fi network with Bluetooth enabled.
- On your Mac, open Finder and click AirDrop in the left sidebar. Set Allow me to be discovered by to Everyone.
- If AirDrop still does not work, email the photos to yourself or upload them to iCloud Drive and download them on your Mac.
- AirDrop is not showing my Mac. How do I troubleshoot this?
Your artwork is digitized and sitting on your Mac, ready to go. Next up, you will drop these photos into a Canva photo book template and see your child's art on real book pages for the first time.
Start Your Book and Place Your First Art Pages
Your artwork photos are captured, sharp, and ready to go. Now it's time to see them inside a real book.
Right now those photos are just files sitting on your Mac. Dropping them into a photo book template in Canva will show you what the finished keepsake looks like, even in rough form.
In this step, get ready to:
- Create a new photo book project from a template in Canva.
- Upload your artwork photos and place them onto book pages.
- Rearrange pages into a logical sequence for your book.
Create a new photo book in Canva
Canva has hundreds of photo book templates ready to go. Picking a clean, simple one means the artwork stays front and center on every page.
- In your browser, head to canva.com.
- Click the search bar at the top of the homepage.
- Type photo book and press Enter.
- Browse the photo book templates that appear.
- Click a template with a clean, simple layout to open it as a new project.
Canva opens the template in a new editor. You should see multiple pre-designed pages with placeholder images and text.
Pick a template that stays out of the way
Look for templates with plenty of white space, minimal decorative elements, and large image placeholders. Your child's artwork should be the star of every page, not the template's design.
Upload your artwork photos and place them
Your photos need to get from your Mac into Canva before you can place them on pages. Uploading them all at once saves time.
- Click Uploads in the left sidebar.
- Drag all of your artwork photos from Finder into the upload area in the panel.
Your photos appear as thumbnails in the Uploads panel once the upload finishes.
Now you'll drop each photo onto its own page in the book.
- Scroll to the first inside page of the template (skip past the cover).
- Drag your first artwork photo from the Uploads panel onto the page, dropping it into the image placeholder.
- Resize or reposition the photo if needed so the artwork is centered and prominent on the page.
- Move to the next page and drag another artwork photo onto it.
- Repeat until you have artwork on at least 3-4 pages, one photo per page.
What happens when I drop a photo onto a placeholder?
The photo snaps to fit the placeholder area automatically. You can double-click the image to adjust which part of the photo is visible, then drag it around inside the frame to recenter.
Click through a few of your pages. Each one should now show one of your child's artwork photos filling the image area.
Photo looking stretched or cropped?
Double-click the image on the page. This opens the crop frame, letting you drag and resize the photo within the placeholder until the full artwork is visible.
If the photo still doesn't fit well, try a different page layout. Some template pages have portrait-oriented placeholders and some have landscape-oriented ones.

Rearrange pages to tell a story
A keepsake book feels intentional when the pages flow in a sequence that makes sense. The order you choose shapes how someone experiences your child's art.
- Look at the page thumbnails in the bottom panel of the editor.
- Decide on an ordering approach: chronological (earliest to most recent), by theme, or by medium (all paintings together, all drawings together).
- Drag pages in the bottom panel to reorder them so the artwork flows in your chosen sequence.
- Right-click any template pages you don't need.
- Select the delete option to remove them.
Not sure which order to use?
Chronological is the easiest starting point. It turns the book into a timeline of your child's growth as an artist. You can always rearrange later.
Before you move on, how many pages with artwork do you expect to see as you scroll through the book?
Scroll through your book from the cover to the last page. You should see at least 3-4 pages, each with one artwork photo placed into the template layout, arranged in the order you chose.
Pages not in the right order?
Make sure you are dragging pages in the bottom thumbnail strip, not dragging elements on the page itself. Click and hold a page thumbnail, then drag it left or right to its new position.
help me reorder pages in my Canva photo book
Your artwork is in the book and the pages are in order. Next, you'll clean up each photo inside Canva so every piece looks its best on the printed page.
Clean Up Your Photos Inside Canva
Your book is taking shape. Each page has an artwork photo placed in the template, and the order tells a story.
Phone photos carry small imperfections that become obvious when printed full-size on a page. In this step, you will use Canva's built-in photo editor to adjust brightness, contrast, and cropping on every artwork photo.
In this step, get ready to:
- Adjust brightness and contrast on your first artwork photo to eliminate grey cast and make colors pop.
- Crop away excess white borders and table edges from each photo.
- Apply consistent edits across all remaining pages so the book looks cohesive.
Adjust brightness and contrast
Phone cameras do a solid job capturing artwork, but indoor lighting always adds a subtle grey cast. The white background of your photo looks slightly dull instead of crisp white, and the colors in the art appear muted compared to the original.
- Navigate to the first artwork page in your book.
- Click on the artwork photo to select it.
- Click Edit image in the toolbar that appears above the photo.
Don't see Edit image?
Depending on your version of Canva, this button may say Edit photo or simply Edit instead. All three labels open the same photo editing panel.
If the button is missing entirely, your Canva team admin may have restricted editing permissions. Why can't I see the Edit image button in Canva?
- In the editing side panel, find the Adjust section.
- Drag the Brightness slider slightly to the right until the white areas of the photo look truly white instead of dull grey.
- Drag the Contrast slider to the right until the colors in the artwork stand out more sharply against the background.
- If the colors still look washed out compared to the original artwork, drag the Saturation slider slightly to the right to restore vibrancy.
The photo updates in real time as you drag each slider. Your artwork should already look noticeably brighter and more vivid than before.
What do these adjustments do?
Brightness controls how light or dark the overall photo appears. Increasing it removes the grey film that indoor lighting leaves on white backgrounds.
Contrast widens the gap between light and dark areas. Boosting it makes the artwork's colors pop instead of blending into the background.
Saturation controls color intensity. A small bump restores colors that look muted compared to the physical original.
Crop away the extra background
Even careful phone photography leaves a bit of extra white background or table edge around the artwork. Cropping trims that away so only the art is visible on the page.
- While still in the photo editor, click the Crop tool.
- Drag the crop handles inward to trim any excess white border or table edge around the artwork.
- Position the crop so just the artwork is visible with a clean edge all around.
- Click Done in the side panel, or click outside the photo to apply the crop.
Look at your page. The artwork should fill the photo frame with no stray white borders or table edges visible.
Try a thin border for a framed look
If the art is on a sheet of paper, you do not have to crop right to the edge. Leaving a thin, even border of paper around the artwork gives it a natural framed look on the page.
Apply consistent edits to the rest of your photos
Your first photo looks great. Now you need to bring every other artwork photo up to the same standard so the book feels like a curated collection, not a mix of edited and unedited shots.
- Navigate to the next artwork page in your book.
- Click on the artwork photo to select it.
- Click Edit image to open the photo editor.
- Adjust Brightness, Contrast, and Saturation using similar slider positions as your first photo.
- Use the Crop tool to trim any excess borders, then click Done to apply.
- Repeat these steps for every remaining artwork page in your book.
Keep your edits consistent
Try to use similar adjustment levels on every photo. If one photo looks noticeably darker or warmer than the others, nudge its sliders until it matches the rest.
Consistency is what makes the book feel professional. A single photo with different color tones breaks the flow of the entire collection.
Before you click through all your pages, take a moment to predict. Do you think every photo will look noticeably different from the unedited originals?
Click through every page in your book from start to finish. Each artwork photo should look bright, vivid, and cleanly cropped, with no grey casts, no stray table edges, and consistent color quality across all pages.
One photo looks off compared to the rest?
Go back to that photo and compare its brightness and contrast settings to your other edits. Even a small difference in slider position can make one page look out of place against the others.
If you adjusted one photo in very different lighting conditions, it may need more brightness or saturation to match. Help me make my artwork photos look consistent across all pages.
Every photo in your book now looks clean and polished. Next up, you will add captions, dates, and stories to turn these pages into a meaningful keepsake.
Add Captions, Dates, and Stories
Your artwork photos are clean, vibrant, and ready to shine on every page. Flip through the book right now, though, and you will notice something missing.
Without captions and dates, this is a photo album, not a keepsake. In this step, you will add text to every page so that years from now, you remember exactly when each piece was made and what inspired it.
In this step, get ready to:
- Add a descriptive caption to each art page.
- Add a date and age detail to each page in a consistent position.
- Apply a unified color scheme across all pages.
Add a caption to each art page
Every piece of art has a story behind it. A caption captures that story before you forget it.
- In your Canva photo book project, click on the first art page.
- Click Text in the left sidebar.
- Choose a simple text style, such as a small heading or body text.
- Type a caption for the artwork. This could be the title your child gave it, a description of what it shows, or a short memory.
For example, you might type something like: "The rainbow cat. Made after our trip to the zoo."
- Position the text below or beside the artwork so it does not cover any part of the art.
- Pick a font that is simple and easy to read.
You should see the caption text sitting neatly alongside the artwork on the page.
Keep your fonts simple
Canva recommends never using more than two fonts in a design. Pick one font for captions and one for dates, then stick with those two throughout the entire book.
- Repeat this process for each remaining art page. Click on the next page, add a Text element, type the caption, and position it.
Once you have finished, every art page in your book should have its own caption.
Text too small to read?
Click on the text box, then drag a corner handle outward to resize it. You can also select the text and increase the font size in the toolbar above the editor. For a printed book, make sure your caption text is large enough to read comfortably on the page.
Why is my caption text hard to read in my photo book?
Add dates and age details
Dates and ages are what turn an art book into a timeline of your child's growth. Without them, you will not remember whether a drawing was from first grade or third grade.
- Click on the first art page in your book.
- Click Text in the left sidebar and add a new text element.
- Type the date or time period and your child's age. For example: "March 2026, Age 8" or "Second grade, Spring 2026."
- Make this text smaller than the caption so it does not compete for attention.
- Position it in a consistent spot on the page, such as the bottom-left or bottom-right corner.
You should now see both the caption and the date on this page.
- Repeat for every art page in your book. Use the same corner position on each page so the dates feel like a consistent design element.
Flip through the pages in the bottom panel. Every art page should now have a caption and a date line in the same position.
Why does position matter?
Placing the date in the same spot on every page creates a visual rhythm. When someone flips through the printed book, their eye will naturally find the date without searching for it. This small consistency makes the whole book feel professionally designed.
Choose a consistent color scheme
Right now your pages probably have the template's default background color. Choosing 2-3 colors that complement your child's artwork will tie the entire book together.
- Pick one of your artwork photos to sample a color from. Look for a dominant or eye-catching color in the art.
- Click on the page background (the area outside your photo and text elements).
- Select Background color from the floating toolbar that appears.
- In the color panel, click the rainbow color tile to open the full color picker.
- Click the Eyedropper tool in the color panel.
- Hover your cursor over a color in one of the artwork photos on the page, then click to sample it.
The page background changes to the sampled color immediately. You should see a soft, art-inspired background behind the photo and text.
What if I do not see the Eyedropper?
The Eyedropper tool is only available in Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, and the Canva desktop app. If you are using a different browser, switch to Chrome or Edge to access it. Alternatively, you can note a color in your artwork and manually enter a similar hex code in the color picker.
- Repeat for the remaining art pages. You can use the same background color on every page for a uniform look, or sample a different color from each piece of art for variety.
- Update the text colors to complement the new backgrounds. Click on a text box, then click Text color in the toolbar and choose a color that contrasts well with the background.
Your pages should now feel unified. Each page has a background color pulled from the artwork, and the text is easy to read against it.
Stick to 2-3 colors
Pick 2-3 colors total for the entire book. Using too many different colors across pages makes the book feel scattered. A muted version of a color from the artwork (like a soft pastel rather than a bright primary) works well as a background because it lets the art stay front and center.
Text disappearing against the background?
If your caption or date text blends into the new background color, the contrast is too low. Try switching the text to white if your background is dark, or to a dark color if your background is light. You can also try a slightly darker or lighter shade of the background color for the text instead of matching it exactly.
How do I make my text readable against my background color in Canva?
Before moving on, flip through every page of your book using the bottom panel. Do you expect every page to have a caption, a date, and a styled background?
Every art page should now have a descriptive caption, a date and age line in a consistent corner, and a background color that complements the artwork. The book should feel like a curated collection rather than a set of unrelated photos.
Your pages now tell a story. Next up, you will design a custom cover and export your finished book.
Design the Cover and Export Your Book
Every art page now has a caption, a date, and a cohesive color scheme tying the whole book together. Your interior pages are done.
The book still has the template's default cover, though. A custom cover with your child's art and name is what turns this from a generic template into a real published book.
In this step, get ready to:
- Design a custom front cover featuring your child's strongest artwork and a playful title.
- Create a simple back cover with a dedication.
- Export the book as a free print-ready PDF or order a printed copy through Canva Print.
Design the front cover
The front cover is the first thing anyone sees. Pick the most colorful or expressive piece of art to feature here.
- Navigate to the first page of your book using the page panel at the bottom of the Canva editor.
- Click on the template's placeholder image on the cover.
- Press the Delete key on your keyboard to remove it.
- Switch to the Uploads panel in the left sidebar.
- Drag your child's strongest or most colorful piece of artwork onto the cover page.
- Resize and reposition the image so it fills the cover or sits prominently in the center.
The cover now shows your child's real art instead of a stock placeholder.
- Click Text in the left sidebar.
- Choose a large heading style and drag it onto the cover.
- Type a playful title for the book. Something like "Ella's Art Book" or "Masterpieces by Liam, Age 8" works well.
- Pick a large, playful font that feels fun and fits your child's personality.
- Optionally, add a smaller subtitle underneath, like "2025-2026" or "A Year of Creativity."
Keep the cover simple
The artwork should be the star of the cover. Avoid adding too many decorative elements, extra shapes, or busy backgrounds that compete with the art.
Your front cover should now show your child's featured artwork, a bold title with their name, and an optional subtitle. It should feel personal and intentional.
Image not fitting the cover?
If the artwork photo looks stretched or cropped awkwardly, double-click the image on the cover to enter crop mode. Drag and resize the photo within the frame until it looks right, then click outside to confirm.
If you cannot find your uploaded photos, click Uploads in the left sidebar. All the artwork photos you uploaded earlier should still be there.

Design the back cover
The back cover does not need to be fancy. A solid color and a short dedication are all it takes.
- Navigate to the last page of your book using the bottom page panel.
- Remove any placeholder content the template has on this page.
- Click on the page background, then select a solid color from your book's color scheme using the color picker in the toolbar above.
- Optionally, drag a small piece of artwork from Uploads onto the page and scale it down so it sits modestly in one corner or the center.
- Add a small text element with a short dedication. Something like "Made with love, August 2026" or a note in your child's own words.
Your back cover should now have a clean, simple design with a solid color background and a personal touch.
Click through every page of your book one more time, from front cover to back cover. The whole book should feel cohesive, with each page showcasing art, a caption, a date, and your chosen color scheme carrying through from cover to cover.
Export or print your finished book
Your book is fully designed. Now it is time to get it out of Canva and into a format you can share or hold in your hands.
You have two options. Download a free high-quality PDF to your Mac, or order a printed hardcover or softcover book shipped to your door through Canva Print.
