Launch Your First Instagram Ad Campaign
Run a live Instagram ad for your sharbath business using Meta Ads Manager.
Introduction
30 Second Summary
You have a delicious sharbath and an Instagram page, but your posts only reach a tiny slice of your followers. Paid advertising is how small businesses break through and get their product in front of customers who have never heard of them.
In this project, you will launch a real Instagram ad campaign for your sharbath business using Meta Ads Manager. You will go from researching what your competitors are advertising to watching real people see and interact with your own ad.
What You'll Build
Imagine opening your Ads Manager dashboard and seeing your sharbath ad live in people's Instagram feeds, with real numbers showing how many people saw it, tapped on it, and what each tap cost you.
By the end of this project, you'll have:
- A clear picture of what competing beverage brands are advertising right now, using Meta Ad Library to base your creative decisions on real data instead of guesswork.
- Your sharbath product photo running as a professional Instagram ad in people's feeds and Stories, with a clear call-to-action driving potential customers to your business.
- A live performance dashboard showing how many people your ad reached, how many clicked, and what each click cost you, so you can decide whether your money is being well spent.
- Secret Mission: Create a carousel ad showcasing multiple sharbath flavors and compare its performance against your single-image ad.
Are there any prerequisites?
You need an Instagram Business account connected to a Facebook Page, a smartphone with the Instagram app, a product photo of your sharbath, and a budget of at least 500 INR for ad spend. If you have not yet switched your Instagram to a Business account or created a Facebook Page, complete those steps before starting this project.
Before We Start
Before we dive in, let's get clear on what your ad campaign will promote and why.
Locking in the specific sharbath product you want to advertise and the action you want customers to take will shape every decision from here on out.
Spy on Competitor Ads with Meta Ad Library
Creating an ad without knowing what your competitors are doing is like walking into an exam without studying. Before spending a single rupee, you want to know what beverage brands in your market are already doing on Instagram and what seems to be working for them.
Meta Ad Library is a free tool that lets you search and see every active ad any business is running across Instagram and Facebook. In this step, you will use it to research competitor ads and build a creative brief for your own sharbath ad.
In this step, get ready to:
- Search for competitor beverage ads using Meta Ad Library.
- Study patterns in competitor ad photos, copy, and calls-to-action.
- Build a competitive insight checklist with three creative decisions for your own ad.
Search for competitor beverage ads
Meta Ad Library shows you every active ad a business is running, including the images, videos, copy text, and when the ad started. You can search any brand without an account or login.
- Open facebook.com/ads/library in your browser.
- In the Select ad category dropdown, select All ads.
- In the Select country dropdown, select India.
- In the search bar, type the name of a competing beverage brand you know, such as Paper Boat, Raw Pressery, or a local sharbath or juice brand in your market.
- Press Enter to search.
You should see a list of ads from that brand. Each ad entry shows the ad image or video, the copy text, the Page name, and the date the ad started running.
What is Meta Ad Library?
Meta Ad Library is a free, public transparency tool from Meta. Anyone can search it to see every ad currently running across Facebook, Instagram, and other Meta products.
For marketers, it is one of the most powerful free research tools available. You can see exactly what your competitors are putting in front of customers right now, without spending anything.
- Search for at least 2 more beverage or food brands by typing their names into the search bar one at a time.
- For each brand, browse through the ads that appear and look at the images, copy text, and how long each ad has been running.
Not seeing any results for a brand?
Make sure your country filter is set to India and the ad category is set to All ads. If the category is set to a different option, commercial brand ads will be filtered out.
Double-check the spelling of the brand name. Try searching the brand's exact Facebook Page name instead of a general keyword. If the brand has no active ads right now, the search will return nothing. Try a different brand.
If you see a blank page, disable any ad blocker extensions in your browser and refresh the page.

Study what works across different ads
Now that you can see competitor ads, look across 3-5 different beverage or food brand ads and take notes on the following patterns.
- Note the photo style each brand uses. Are they showing lifestyle shots of someone drinking the product, product-only shots on a clean background, or flat-lay arrangements with ingredients? Notice which style catches your eye first.
- Note the copy pattern in each ad's text. Do they open with a benefit ("Stay refreshed"), a question ("Craving something cool?"), or an offer ("20% off this week")? Pay attention to which opening makes you want to read more.
- Note the call-to-action button each ad uses. Common options include Shop Now, Send Message, Learn More, and Order Now.
- Note the ad longevity. Check the date each ad started running. If an ad has been running for weeks or months, it is likely performing well for that brand.
Why does ad longevity matter?
Ads that lose money get turned off quickly. If you see a competitor ad that has been running for several weeks or months, it almost certainly means the ad is generating a positive return for them. Long-running ads are some of the best signals you can find for what actually works.
Build your competitive insight checklist
Based on your research, you now have a feel for what is working in the beverage ad space. It is time to turn those observations into decisions for your own sharbath ad.
- Open a notes app, a piece of paper, or a document on your computer.
- Write down the photo style you will use for your ad, based on what caught your attention most in the competitor ads.
- Write down the copy opening style you will use: benefit-first, question, or offer.
- Write down the call-to-action button you will use, such as Send Message, Learn More, or Order Now.
This checklist is your creative brief
These three decisions become the creative brief you follow in the next step when you prepare your ad photo and write your copy. Having a plan based on real competitor data means you are not guessing. You are making informed choices.
Before you move on, take a moment to check your checklist. Do you think these three decisions will make your ad stand out from the competitor ads you just saw, or blend in with them?
You should have three clear decisions written down: a photo style, a copy opening style, and a call-to-action button. These three items are your creative brief for building the ad in the next step.
Your competitive research is done and your creative brief is ready. Next up, you will use these insights to create an ad photo and write copy that is designed to stop the scroll.
Create Your Ad Creative
You have studied what your competitors are running and noted the patterns that catch your eye. Now it is time to turn that research into your own ad creative.
Even with a perfect audience, a weak image or confusing text gets scrolled past in under a second. Your sharbath is a visual product, so the creative needs to stop the scroll and make someone thirsty enough to tap.
In this step, get ready to:
- Prepare a high-quality product photo in the style you chose from your competitor research.
- Write compelling ad copy and confirm your call-to-action button.
- Preview your creative against your Instagram feed before spending any money.
Prepare your product photo
Your product photo is the single most important element of your ad. It is the first thing a person sees as they scroll, and it determines whether they stop or keep going.
- Select or take a high-quality photo of your sharbath product, using the photo style you chose from your competitive research (lifestyle shot, product-only, or flat-lay).
- Use natural lighting and make the drink look fresh and appealing.
- Make sure the image is at least 1080 x 1080 pixels. A standard smartphone camera photo will exceed this.
- For the aspect ratio, use a 1:1 (square) crop for Feed ads, or a 9:16 (vertical) crop for Stories and Reels ads.
- If you have both a square and a vertical version, prepare both. If you only have one, a square image is the safest choice because it works across all placements.
- Save the final photo to your computer so it is ready to upload later.
Why do image dimensions matter?
Instagram requires a minimum of 1080 x 1080 pixels for Feed, Stories, and Reels ad placements. Images below this size will look blurry or pixelated, which makes your product look unprofessional.
The maximum file size for an Instagram ad image is 30 MB. Any photo taken on a modern smartphone will fit comfortably within both limits.
- Verify the photo dimensions on your phone. On most smartphones, you can find image dimensions in the photo details or info section of your gallery app.
- Confirm the width and height are both at least 1080 pixels.
Photo looks blurry or too small?
If your photo is below 1080 x 1080 pixels, retake it with your smartphone's main camera (not the front-facing camera, which is often lower resolution). Make sure you are not cropping too aggressively, as cropping reduces the pixel count.
help me figure out why my product photo is too small or blurry for an Instagram ad
Write your ad copy and choose your CTA
Your ad copy is the short text that appears alongside your photo. It has about one second to communicate why someone should care about your sharbath.
- Write a short, compelling ad caption using the copy opening style you chose from your research (benefit-first, question, or offer).
- Keep the caption under 125 characters so it does not get truncated in the feed.
- Structure your copy as: what the product benefit is, what it is, and what to do next.
What does a good ad caption look like?
A strong caption follows the pattern: [Product benefit] + [What it is] + [Call to action].
For example: "Beat the heat with our refreshing rose sharbath. Made with real rose petals. Order now! DM us or tap the link." The benefit grabs attention, the detail adds credibility, and the call to action tells them what to do.
- Confirm the call-to-action button you decided on during your competitor research. For a product business driving messages or profile visits, Send Message or Learn More are strong choices.
- Write your final ad copy text down (in a notes app, a document, or on paper) so you can paste it directly into Meta Ads Manager later.
Read your ad copy out loud. Is the benefit clear within the first few words? If not, rearrange so the strongest hook comes first.
Preview your creative
Before you spend money, take one minute to see how your creative will look in the real world. This quick check can save you from launching an ad that blends in and gets ignored.
Before you compare, think about this: do you expect your product photo to stand out from the normal posts in your feed, or blend in?
- Open your product photo on your phone.
- Open your Instagram feed and scroll to any spot in the feed.
- Hold your product photo next to the feed. Does it stand out from normal posts, or does it blend in?
- If the photo blends in too much, consider increasing contrast, adjusting the angle, or making the drink the clear focal point.
Why finalize everything before launch?
Once your ad is live, making changes to the image or copy resets the ad's learning phase. During this phase, Meta is figuring out who responds best to your ad. Resetting it means your budget gets spent on re-learning instead of reaching your best audience.
Get your creative right now, so every rupee works hard from day one.
At this point, you should have three things ready: a final product photo (at least 1080 x 1080 pixels) saved on your computer, your ad copy text written down, and your call-to-action button chosen.
Your creative is locked in and ready to go. Next up, you will open Meta Ads Manager and build the actual campaign that puts this photo and copy in front of real people.
Build Your Campaign in Meta Ads Manager
Your ad creative is locked in. You have a sharbath product photo, compelling copy, and a call-to-action button ready to go.
Now it is time to build the campaign that delivers your ad to real customers. Meta Ads Manager is the professional tool that lets you set a specific business objective, configure your budget, and control exactly how your money is spent.
Why Ads Manager instead of the Boost button?
Instagram's Boost button optimizes for engagement metrics like likes and comments. These look nice, but they do not directly generate orders or messages from customers.
Meta Ads Manager lets you choose a real business objective like driving traffic to your profile or getting direct messages. Your budget goes toward actions that can actually lead to sales.
In this step, get ready to:
- Create a new campaign in Meta Ads Manager with a business objective.
- Set a daily budget and campaign schedule to control your spending.
- Observe how Meta's default audience targeting works and spot the problem.
Create a new campaign
Meta Ads Manager organizes everything into three levels: a Campaign (your objective), an Ad Set (your budget, schedule, and audience), and an Ad (your creative). You will work through these levels one at a time.
- Open adsmanager.facebook.com in your browser and log in with the Facebook account connected to your Instagram Business account.
- Click the green + Create button.
- Choose your campaign objective. Select Traffic if you want people to visit your profile or website.
- Select Engagement instead if you want people to send you a direct message.
- Click Continue.
What are campaign objectives?
Your objective tells Meta what result you want from your ad. Meta then shows your ad to the people most likely to take that action. There are 6 objectives in total: Awareness, Traffic, Engagement, Leads, App promotion, and Sales.
For a local sharbath business wanting orders and messages, Traffic or Engagement are the strongest starting points.
- Name your campaign something descriptive. Type Sharbath Summer Campaign in the campaign name field.
- Click Next to move to the ad set level.
Seeing Advantage+ suggestions?
Meta is rolling out a new recommended setup experience for Traffic, Awareness, and Engagement objectives. You may see a campaign score on the right side of the page, or some options toggled on by default. Manual options are still available. If you see any Advantage+ prompts, you can leave them as they are for now or toggle them off to follow along with the manual setup described here.
You should now be on the ad set level, where you configure your budget, schedule, and audience.
Set your budget and schedule
Your total budget for this project is around 2000 INR. Spending it all in one day gives Meta no time to learn which people respond best to your ad. Spreading it across several days produces much better results.
- In the Budget & Schedule section, set the budget type to Daily budget.
- Enter a daily amount between 200 and 300 INR per day. This lets the campaign run for 7-10 days, giving Meta enough data to optimize delivery.
- Under Schedule, set a Start date (today or your preferred launch day).
- Set an End date 7-10 days from your start date so the campaign stops automatically when your budget period ends.
Why set an end date?
Without an end date, Meta keeps spending your daily budget indefinitely. Setting an end date prevents accidental overspending. You can always extend the campaign later if results look good.
Your budget and schedule are now configured. Do not click Next yet. Stay on this page for the next substep.
Observe the default audience
Before changing any audience settings, take a close look at what Meta gives you by default. This is a deliberate pause. You are about to see a problem that you will fix in the next step.
What do you think Meta's default audience targeting looks like? Do you think it is already focused on your local area, or is it set to something broader?
- Scroll down to the Audience section on the same ad set page.
- Look at the location targeting. Notice what country or region is selected by default.
- Now look at the Estimated daily results panel on the right side of the page. This shows how many people your ad is estimated to reach each day with your current budget and targeting.
Meta's default targeting is set to a very broad audience, potentially reaching people across all of India. With your small daily budget spread across millions of people, the estimated reach is tiny relative to the total audience size.
Your sharbath business serves a specific area, not the entire country. This broad default is wasting your budget on people who can never buy from you. That is exactly the problem you will fix in the next step.
Why does broad targeting waste your budget?
Imagine handing out flyers for your sharbath shop. Broad targeting is like mailing those flyers to every address in India. Most recipients live too far away to ever visit you. Your 200-300 INR daily budget gets spread so thin that almost nobody in your actual neighbourhood sees the ad.
Narrowing the audience to your delivery or service area concentrates every rupee on people who could realistically become customers.
Not seeing the Estimated daily results panel?
Make sure your browser window is wide enough. The panel appears on the right side and can be hidden on narrow screens. Try maximizing your browser window.
If you still do not see it, confirm that you have set a daily budget and an objective. The panel needs both to calculate estimates.
Why can't I see the Estimated daily results panel in my Meta Ads Manager?
Your campaign skeleton is built, but there is a glaring problem. Your ad could show to someone 2000 km away who will never taste your sharbath. In the next step, you will fix that by targeting your actual local audience and launching your ad.
Target Your Local Audience and Launch
In the last step, you created your campaign and noticed that Meta Ads Manager's default audience targeting reaches people across all of India. That means your ad could show to someone 2,000 km away who will never order your sharbath.
Narrowing the audience to your actual service area means every rupee goes toward someone who could realistically become a customer. You'll also upload your sharbath photo and ad copy, then publish the campaign.
In this step, get ready to:
- Narrow your audience targeting to your local delivery area.
- Upload your sharbath ad creative and preview it across placements.
- Publish the campaign and confirm it is live.
Set location targeting for your service area
In the last step, you saw the Estimated daily results panel showing low efficiency with a broad audience. Now you'll replace that broad targeting with your actual delivery area so your budget stops leaking.
- In the Audience section of your ad set, find the Locations field.
- Remove any broad defaults. If you see a country-level entry like India, click the X next to it to remove it.
- Type your city name or the specific areas you deliver to into the location field.
Look at the Estimated daily results panel on the right side of the screen. Compared to the broad default you saw in the last step, your estimated reach is already a much larger percentage of your total audience.
Why does a smaller audience improve results?
A broad audience spreads your daily budget across millions of people, most of whom live too far away to buy from you. A focused local audience concentrates every rupee on people who can actually place an order.
This is why professional marketers always narrow their targeting before launching a campaign.
Set demographics and interest targeting
- Set a radius that matches your delivery or service area.
- Set the age range to your typical customer demographic. For example, 18 to 45.
You can optionally add interest targeting to help Meta find relevant people.
- In the interests field, try typing keywords like Beverages, Fruit juice, or Summer drinks.
- Keep it broad enough that Meta still has room to find the right people. Two or three interests is plenty.
Check the Estimated daily results panel again. With a smaller, local audience, your budget is being used more efficiently than the broad default.
Advantage+ Audience may be on by default
Meta may have Advantage+ Audience enabled, which treats your targeting inputs as suggestions and expands beyond them. If you want strict control over your audience, look for a link that says Further limit the reach of your ads and click it to switch to manual audience settings.
Location field not showing your city?
Try typing the full city name slowly and wait for the dropdown suggestions to appear. If your city is small, try a nearby larger city or district and adjust the radius to cover your delivery area.
If you are still stuck, help me set location targeting for my local area.
Upload your ad creative
Your audience is set. Now you'll attach the product photo, ad copy, and call-to-action button you prepared earlier so people in your area actually see a compelling ad.
- Scroll down to the Ad level, below the ad set.
- Under Ad creative, click Add Media.
- Select Add Image.
- Upload your sharbath product photo from your computer.
Your photo appears in the ad creative section. You can see a thumbnail of the image you uploaded.
- In the Primary text field, paste your ad copy.
- Select your call-to-action button from the dropdown. Choose Send Message, Learn More, or whichever CTA you decided on during your competitor research.
- Under Ad preview, click through the different placements: Feed, Stories, and Reels.
Check that your image and text look good in each format. If the image gets cropped awkwardly on any placement, adjust the crop using the edit tools provided.
Why preview across placements?
Your ad can appear in Instagram Feed, Stories, and Reels. Each placement has a different aspect ratio. A square photo that looks great in Feed might get cropped oddly in Stories. Previewing now saves you from discovering a badly cropped ad after your budget has already been spent.
Image not uploading?
Check that your photo is at least 1080 x 1080 pixels and under 30 MB. Most smartphone photos meet these requirements, but screenshots or heavily compressed images might not.
If you are still stuck, help me upload my ad image to Meta Ads Manager.
Review and publish your campaign
Everything is in place. Before you publish, take a moment to predict what will happen next.
Do you think your ad will start showing to people immediately after you click Publish, or will something else happen first?
- Click the Review button at the bottom of the page.
- Double-check your objective, daily budget, schedule, audience location, and creative.
- If everything looks correct, click Publish.
Meta reviews every ad before it goes live. This usually takes anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours. Your campaign status in Ads Manager shows In review and then switches to Active once approved.
What happens during ad review?
Meta's automated system checks your ad image, text, targeting, and destination link against its advertising policies. Most ads pass this check within minutes. If the system is uncertain, your ad may go to a human reviewer, which can take longer.
Your budget is not charged until the ad starts delivering. No money is spent during the review period.
- Click on your campaign name to see your ad set and ad details.
- Confirm the correct budget, schedule, audience location, and creative are all in place.
Your campaign status should show In review or Active. Either status means your campaign was submitted successfully.
Ad rejected or stuck in review?
If your ad is rejected, Meta will show a notification with the specific reason. Common reasons include images with too much text, misleading claims, or a missing landing page. Fix the flagged issue and resubmit.
If your ad has been in review for more than a few hours, wait it out. Pausing and republishing usually resets the review clock rather than speeding it up.
If you need more help, help me figure out why my ad was rejected or is stuck in review.
Your ad is live and reaching real people in your local area. Next up, you'll learn how to read the results dashboard so you can tell whether your 2,000 INR is generating real interest or needs adjusting.
Read Your Results and Know What's Working
Your ad is live and reaching real people in your local area. That is a huge milestone for your sharbath business.
A running ad is like an open tap. Without checking the meter, you have no idea whether the water is flowing where you need it. Your Meta Ads Manager dashboard tells you exactly how your 2000 INR is being spent.
In this step, get ready to:
- Identify key performance metrics on your campaign dashboard.
- Decide whether to continue, adjust, or pause your campaign based on real data.
Navigate to your campaign dashboard
Before you check your numbers, take a guess. Do you think most people who saw your ad clicked on it, or do you think most scrolled past?
- Return to adsmanager.facebook.com in your browser.
- Click on your campaign name (Sharbath Summer Campaign) to open its details.
You will see a table with columns of metrics. These are the key numbers to focus on:
- Reach: How many unique people saw your ad.
- Impressions: Total number of times your ad was shown. One person can see it multiple times.
- CTR (Click-Through Rate): The percentage of people who saw your ad and clicked on it. A CTR above 1% is generally a good sign for a local business.
- CPC (Cost Per Click): How much you paid for each click. Lower is better. Compare this to how much a single sharbath sale is worth to you.
- CPM (Cost Per 1000 Impressions): How much it costs to show your ad to 1000 people.
Which metrics matter most?
Reach and Impressions tell you how far your budget is stretching. If your Reach is very low, your audience might be too narrow.
CTR tells you whether your creative is actually making people curious enough to tap. CPC tells you if each tap is worth the cost relative to what you earn from a sale.
Look at the numbers in your table. Your Reach tells you how many real people in your area saw your sharbath ad, and your CTR tells you how many of them were interested enough to take action.
Not seeing any data?
If your metrics show all zeros, check that your campaign status says Active, not In review. Meta typically reviews ads within a few hours, but it can sometimes take up to 24 hours. If your campaign is Active but still shows no data, make sure at least 24 hours have passed since it was approved.
Help me figure out why my Meta ad campaign is not showing any data.
Make a decision
Numbers on a dashboard only matter if they lead to a decision. Based on what you see, you have three paths forward.
- Results are good (CTR above 1%, clicks are leading to messages or profile visits): Keep the campaign running until your budget is spent. Consider allocating more budget next time.
- Results are mediocre (CTR below 0.5%, low engagement): Your creative might not be stopping the scroll. Try a different photo or rewrite your copy to lead with a stronger benefit.
- Results are poor (very few impressions, high CPC): Your audience might be too narrow, or your ad is not resonating. Widen the location radius slightly or adjust your targeting.
What if my results look different from all three?
With a small daily budget, your numbers might be modest across the board. That is normal. Focus on the direction the metrics point rather than the exact values. A CTR trending upward over several days is a good sign even if the absolute number is low.
- To pause your campaign at any time, click the toggle next to your campaign name in Ads Manager. This stops all spending immediately.
Pausing does not delete anything
Pausing keeps your campaign, ad set, and creative intact. You can resume at any time by toggling the campaign back on. Your historical performance data stays visible in the dashboard.
Based on the metrics you see, do you think your campaign has earned more budget, or does something need to change first?
You should now be able to navigate to your campaign dashboard, identify your Reach, CTR, and CPC numbers, and articulate whether your campaign is performing well or needs adjustment.
Secret mission
Create a Carousel Ad Showcasing Multiple Flavors
Your single-image ad shows one product. But what if a customer would love a different flavor? In this mission, you will create a carousel ad that lets people swipe through your full sharbath range, then run it alongside your original ad to discover which format your audience prefers.
Clean Up Your Resources
Clean Up Your Resources
Your ad campaign is the only resource in this project that costs money. Your daily budget of 200-300 INR will continue to be charged as long as the campaign is active. Your Instagram Business account, Facebook Page, Meta Ads Manager, and Meta Ad Library are all free to use.
Cost warning
Your campaign spends your daily budget (200-300 INR/day) every day it remains active. If you are done testing, pause or delete the campaign now to stop all charges immediately.
Resources you used:
- Meta Ads Manager campaign (Sharbath Summer Campaign) with two ads (single-image and carousel). This is the only paid resource.
- Instagram Business account (free). Can be switched back to a Creator account at any time.
