Build an Evergreen Marketing Funnel
Build a lead-capture funnel with email automation and conversion tracking.
Introduction
30 Second Summary
You have built a course and published it online. The harder question is how to get a steady stream of people to discover it, trust you, and buy it.
In this project, you will build a complete evergreen marketing funnel for a technical leadership course using systeme.io. You'll create a lead-magnet opt-in page, write a 5-email nurture sequence, and connect everything with automation so the funnel runs on autopilot.
What You'll Build
Someone clicks your link, enters their email for a free checklist, and over the next ten days receives five emails that build trust and guide them to your course sales page while your dashboard tracks every conversion.
By the end of this project, you'll have:
- A live opt-in page where visitors enter their email to download a free lead magnet, then land on a thank-you page that sets expectations for the emails ahead.
- A 5-email automated nurture sequence that delivers value, handles objections, and guides subscribers toward your course over ten days without you sending a single manual email.
- A course sales page linked from your final email, with funnel analytics tracking conversions at every step so you can see exactly where visitors drop off.
- Secret Mission: Run an A/B test on your opt-in page headline to discover which version converts more visitors into subscribers.
Are there any prerequisites?
You'll need a free systeme.io account. The free plan covers everything in this project, including 3 sales funnels, 2,000 contacts, and unlimited email sends.
Before We Start
Before you build anything, you need to commit to the specific transformation your course delivers.
This single sentence will drive every headline, email, and page you create throughout the funnel.
Map Your Funnel and Create the Lead Magnet Opt-In Page
You have your course transformation promise locked in. Now you need a way to capture the email addresses of people who are interested in that transformation.
Without a landing page that collects emails, you have no leads to nurture. In this step, you will create the top of your marketing funnel: a live opt-in page that offers a free lead magnet in exchange for an email address, plus a thank-you page that confirms the download.
In this step, get ready to:
- Create a new funnel in systeme.io with an opt-in page and thank-you page.
- Design a professional opt-in page with a benefit-driven headline, bullet points, and email form.
- Customize the thank-you page and test the full opt-in flow.
Create the funnel
A funnel in systeme.io is a sequence of pages that guide a visitor toward a specific action. Your first funnel will start simple: an opt-in page to collect emails and a thank-you page to confirm the signup.
- In your systeme.io dashboard, click the Sites tab in the top menu bar.
- Click Sales funnels.
- Click Create.
A popup window appears asking you to configure your new funnel.
- In the Name field, enter Code to Leadership Funnel.
- Leave the Domain set to your default systeme.io domain.
- Select your preferred Currency.
- Under funnel type, select Build an Audience.
Why Build an Audience?
systeme.io offers four funnel types: Build an Audience, Sell, Custom, and Run an Evergreen Webinar. The Build an Audience type is the simplest. It automatically creates an Opt-in page and a Thank you page for you.
That is exactly the structure you need to start collecting email addresses for your course.
After selecting the funnel type, systeme.io creates your funnel and takes you to the funnel dashboard. You should see two steps listed: an Opt-in page and a Thank you page.
Don't see two steps listed?
Make sure you selected Build an Audience as the funnel type. If you chose Custom, the funnel starts blank with no pages. Delete the funnel and create a new one with the correct type.

Design the opt-in page
Your opt-in page has one job: convince a visitor to trade their email address for your free lead magnet. Every element on this page should support that single goal.
- In the funnel dashboard, click Edit page on the Opt-in page step.
- Choose a template from the template gallery that looks closest to what you want.
The drag-and-drop editor opens with your chosen template loaded. Now customize it with your course content.
- Replace the headline with a benefit-driven title for your lead magnet (e.g., The 5-Step Technical Leadership Checklist). This headline should promise a specific, tangible result.
- Add 3-5 bullet points below the headline describing what the lead magnet delivers. Each bullet should name a concrete benefit, not a vague promise.
- Make sure the form includes fields for both Name and Email.
- Change the CTA button text to something specific (e.g., Get My Free Checklist). Avoid generic text like Submit.
- Remove any navigation links, menus, or extra buttons from the page so the only action a visitor can take is to opt in.
Why remove navigation links?
Every extra link on an opt-in page is an escape route. If a visitor can click away to your blog, social media, or another page, they might leave without entering their email. A focused page with one action converts better than a page with many choices.
Now configure the form button so it actually submits the email and redirects to the thank-you page.
- Click the form button (your CTA button) on the page to open its settings.
- For the Action when button clicked option, select Submit form.
- Set the redirection option to To the next step.
- Click Save in the editor to save your opt-in page.
What does Submit form do?
The Submit form action captures the visitor's name and email into your systeme.io contact list. Combined with the To the next step redirect, it saves the lead and immediately sends them to your thank-you page.
Don't see the button settings?
Make sure you are clicking directly on the button element inside the form, not on the text above it or the form container itself. The button settings panel should appear on the left or right side of the editor.
Help me find my button settings in the systeme.io editor.
Customize the thank-you page and test your funnel
After someone opts in, the thank-you page is the first thing they see. It confirms their action and sets expectations for the emails they are about to receive.
- Go back to your funnel dashboard by closing the page editor or navigating to Sites > Sales funnels and clicking your funnel name.
- Click Edit page on the Thank you page step.
- Replace the default content with a confirmation message such as Your checklist is on its way!
- Add a line telling them to check their inbox for the resource.
- Add a short preview of what the upcoming emails will cover (e.g., "Over the next few days, you will get actionable tips on thinking strategically, leading technical projects, and positioning yourself for promotion.").
- Click Save to save the thank-you page.
Why preview the upcoming emails?
When subscribers know what to expect, they watch for your emails instead of ignoring them. A quick preview on the thank-you page primes them to open your first email, which boosts your open rates from the very start.
Now test the full opt-in flow to make sure everything is wired up correctly.
- Go back to your funnel dashboard.
- Select the Opt-in page step and click the link icon next to it to copy the page URL.
- Paste the URL into a new browser tab.
Before you do anything on this page, take a moment. Do you think entering a test email and clicking the button will take you to the thank-you page, or will something go wrong?
- Enter a test name and email address into the form.
- Click your CTA button.
You should land on your thank-you page with the confirmation message and email preview you just wrote. Your opt-in page is live and collecting emails.
Clicking the button does nothing?
Go back to the page editor, click your CTA button, and confirm that Action when button clicked is set to Submit form and the redirection is set to To the next step. If these settings are missing, the button does not know where to send the visitor.
Also make sure the button is inside the form element, not floating separately on the page. A button outside the form will not capture the email data.
Help me fix my opt-in page button.
Your funnel's front door is open. You have a live opt-in page collecting emails and a thank-you page setting expectations. Next up, you will build the 5-email nurture sequence that turns those new subscribers into warm leads.
Build Your 5-Email Nurture Campaign
Your opt-in page is live and capturing emails. That is a great start, but collecting emails is only the first move.
Most people do not buy on their first visit. An automated email sequence keeps working after leads leave your opt-in page, building trust over days and moving them toward your offer. Without it, the emails you just collected go cold.
In this step, get ready to:
- Create an email campaign in systeme.io.
- Write and schedule 5 nurture emails that guide leads from curious to ready-to-buy.
- Send yourself a test email to verify formatting and delivery.
Create the email campaign
systeme.io separates Campaigns (automated sequences) from Newsletters (one-time broadcasts). Your nurture sequence is a campaign because each email sends automatically based on a delay after the previous one.
- In the top menu bar, click the Emails tab.
- Click Campaigns.
- Click Create.
- In the popup, enter Leadership Nurture Sequence as the campaign name.
- Select your sender email address from the dropdown.
- Add a short description (e.g. 5-email sequence for Code to Leadership leads).
- Click Save.
A notification confirms your campaign has been created. You should see it listed under Campaigns.
What is a campaign in systeme.io?
A campaign is a pre-written sequence of emails that sends automatically, one after another, based on delays you configure. Each subscriber receives the emails in order, starting from the moment they are added to the campaign.
Use a custom domain email if you can
systeme.io warns that emails sent from free email addresses (like Gmail or Yahoo) are more likely to land in spam due to Google and Yahoo sender policies. If you have a custom domain, use it as your sender address. For this learning project, the default sender works fine for testing.
Write and schedule your first email
Each email in the campaign needs a subject line, content, and a sending delay that controls when it goes out relative to the previous email. You will walk through Email 1 in full detail, then follow the same process for the remaining four.
- Click on the campaign name Leadership Nurture Sequence to open it.
- Click Create to add the first email.
- In the popup, enter a subject line like Your Leadership Checklist Is Here.
- Enter your name in the Sender name field.
- Confirm the Sender email address matches the one you chose for the campaign.
- Select Classic editor as the editor type.
- Click Save.
The classic editor opens. This is where you write the email body.
- Write a short welcome email that delivers the lead magnet. Include a greeting, a link or description of where to find the checklist, and one sentence setting expectations for the next few emails.
- In the right-hand panel, find the sending delay section.
- Set the Delay to 0 Days so this email sends immediately when someone subscribes.
- Choose a Specific Time for sending (e.g. 9:00 AM).
- Select all seven days under Sending Days so new subscribers get the welcome email any day of the week.
- Click Save.
How do campaign delays work?
Each email's delay is measured from the previous email in the sequence. Email 1 with a 0-day delay sends right away. Email 2 with a 2-day delay sends 2 days after Email 1. All three conditions (delay, time of day, and day of week) must be met before the email goes out.
You should now see Email 1 listed in your campaign. It may appear grayed out until all delay settings are saved and the email is activated.
Add Emails 2 through 5
Now follow the same process for the remaining four emails. For each one, click Create, fill in the popup fields with the Classic editor, write the email body, configure the delay, and click Save.
Here is what each email should cover:
Email 2 (2 days after Email 1):
- Subject line example: One Quick Win You Can Use Today.
- Content: Share one actionable tip a technical builder can use immediately to start thinking more strategically.
- Set Delay to 2 Days.
Email 3 (2 days after Email 2):
- Subject line example: How One Developer Made the Leap.
- Content: Tell a transformation story. A real example of someone who moved from code-only work to strategic leadership, and what shifted for them.
- Set Delay to 2 Days.
After creating Emails 2 and 3, confirm they both appear in your campaign list alongside Email 1. You should see three emails listed in top-to-bottom order.
Email 4 (2 days after Email 3):
- Subject line example: The Biggest Objection to Leadership Growth.
- Content: Address the biggest objection your audience has. Tackle thoughts like "I do not have time for leadership development" or "I am too junior for this" directly.
- Set Delay to 2 Days.
Email 5 (2 days after Email 4):
- Subject line example: Ready to Go Deeper?.
- Content: A soft pitch introducing your course as the next step for those who want to go deeper. Mention that you will add a link to your sales page once it is built in the next step.
- Set Delay to 2 Days.
After saving Email 5, check that all five emails appear in your campaign list in order from top to bottom. The email at the top is sent first.
Why does the email order matter?
systeme.io sends campaign emails in top-to-bottom order. The email at the top of the list is sent first. If your emails appear out of order, the subscriber will receive them in the wrong sequence.
Emails appearing grayed out?
New emails may appear grayed out with a gray dot if they have not been fully configured with sending delays. Open each email, confirm the delay settings are filled in, and click Save again. The email should then become active in the sequence.
Help me figure out why my campaign emails are inactive.
Send yourself a test email
Before you consider this campaign done, verify that at least Email 1 looks correct by sending yourself a test. This catches formatting issues and broken content before any real subscriber sees it.
- Click on Email 1 in your campaign to open it.
- Click Save and test.
Where does the test email go?
systeme.io sends test emails to the address configured in your account's email settings. To check or change it, click your profile picture, select Settings, then click Emails. Look for the Testing section. The email address listed there must be confirmed before test sends work.
- Open the inbox for your test email address.
- Find the test email from your campaign.
- Confirm that the subject line, sender name, formatting, and content all look correct.
Before you check your inbox, what do you think the email will look like? Will the subject line match what you typed?
You should see your Email 1 arrive with the subject line you entered, your sender name, and the welcome content you wrote. If everything looks correct, your campaign emails are ready.
Did not receive the test email?
Check your spam or junk folder. Emails from systeme.io's shared sending domain sometimes land there, especially if you are using a free email address like Gmail.
Make sure you have a confirmed test email address in your account settings. Go to your profile picture, click Settings, then Emails, and look under Verified email addresses. If your address is not listed, add it and click the confirmation link sent to that inbox.
Help me troubleshoot my systeme.io test email.
Your nurture sequence is written, scheduled, and tested. Right now, though, nobody is entering it automatically. In the next step, you will build the sales page that Email 5 points to, then wire everything together with an automation rule.
Build the Course Sales Page
Your 5-email nurture sequence is built, tested, and ready to guide leads from curious to convinced.
But right now, Email 5 promises a next step that does not exist yet. Without a sales page, your nurture emails dead-end and leads have nowhere to convert. In this step, you will create the destination your entire email sequence has been building toward.
In this step, get ready to:
- Add a sales page step to your funnel.
- Design the page with your course's transformation promise, benefits, social proof, and a call-to-action.
- Link Email 5 to the sales page so your nurture sequence has a clear destination.
Add a sales page step to your funnel
Your funnel currently has two steps: an opt-in page and a thank-you page. Adding a sales page gives you a third step where warmed-up leads can learn about your course and decide to enroll.
- Return to your funnel by clicking the Sites tab, then clicking Sales funnels.
- Click on your Code to Leadership Funnel to open it.
- Click Add step in the left-hand menu.
- From the Type field, select Sales page.
- Choose a template or create from scratch.
- Click Save.
You should now see three steps listed in your funnel's left-hand menu: your opt-in page, thank-you page, and the new sales page.
Don't see the Sales page option?
Make sure you clicked Add step in the left-hand menu, not a different button. The Type dropdown appears in the step creation form that opens.
The free plan supports up to 10 funnel steps total across all funnels. If you have used steps in other funnels, you may need to remove some first.
Still stuck? Help me add a sales page step to my systeme.io funnel.
Design your sales page
Your sales page has one job: convince a warmed-up lead that your course is their logical next step. Every section on this page should build toward that decision.
- Click Edit page on the sales page step to open the drag-and-drop editor.
- Add a headline that restates the transformation your course delivers (e.g., Go From Code-Only Contributor to the Strategic Leader Your Company Promotes).
- Below the headline, add 3-5 bullet points listing specific outcomes a student will achieve after completing the course.
- Add a social proof section with testimonials, a student count, or credibility markers. Placeholder content is fine for now.
- Add a FAQ section addressing 2-3 common hesitations (e.g., "How much time does this take?" or "Is this right for junior developers?").
- Add a prominent CTA button with specific text (e.g., Start My Leadership Journey or Enroll Now). Avoid generic labels like "Submit" or "Click Here".
Why these five sections?
Each section plays a distinct role in the buying decision. The headline grabs attention with the promised transformation. The outcomes list makes that promise concrete and specific.
Social proof reduces risk by showing others have taken the same step. The FAQ section handles objections before they become reasons to leave. The CTA button gives the reader a clear, single action to take.
- Save the page in the editor.
- Click the preview icon to see your page as a visitor would.
You should see a complete page with your course headline at the top, benefit bullets, a social proof section, a FAQ section, and a CTA button. Keep this preview tab open so you can copy the URL in the next substep.
Page looks blank or unstyled?
Make sure you saved inside the editor before previewing. Unsaved changes will not appear in the preview.
If sections are overlapping or misaligned, go back to the editor and check that each content block is placed in its own row. Drag-and-drop editors sometimes stack elements on top of each other.

Link Email 5 to the sales page
Your sales page is live, but your nurture sequence does not point to it yet. Email 5 is the soft pitch that introduces your course. It needs a link so readers can click through to your sales page.
- Copy the sales page URL from your browser's address bar in the preview tab you just opened.
- Navigate to the Emails tab, then click Campaigns.
- Click on your Leadership Nurture Sequence campaign.
- Click on Email 5 (your soft pitch email) to open it for editing.
- Select the CTA text in your email body where you mention the course or invite readers to learn more.
- Click the link icon in the editor toolbar and paste your sales page URL.
- Click Save.
How do I verify the link works?
After saving, use Save and test to send yourself a copy of Email 5. Open the test email in your inbox and click the CTA link. It should open your sales page in the browser.
Link not clickable in the test email?
Make sure you highlighted the text first and then clicked the link icon. If you pasted the URL into the email body as plain text, it will not be a clickable hyperlink.
Double-check that the URL you pasted starts with https://. A link without the protocol prefix may not work in all email clients.
Still having trouble? Help me add a hyperlink to my systeme.io campaign email.
Take a moment before your final check. What do you expect to see when you open the sales page URL in a fresh browser tab?
- Open your sales page URL in a new browser tab (or an incognito window).
You should see a live page with your course headline, benefit bullets, social proof section, FAQ section, and a clear call-to-action button.
Your sales page is live and your email sequence now has a real destination. Next up, you will wire the opt-in form to the email campaign so the entire funnel runs on autopilot.
Connect the Automation and Go Live
Your course sales page is live. Email 5 already links to it. Every piece of the funnel is in place: an opt-in page, a thank-you page, a 5-email nurture campaign, and a sales page.
There is one critical gap. If someone fills out your opt-in form right now, they never receive your email sequence because the two pieces are not connected. In this step, you will create an automation rule that wires them together so the funnel runs on autopilot.
In this step, get ready to:
- Create an automation rule connecting the opt-in form to the email campaign.
- Test the full funnel end to end with a fresh email address.
Create the automation rule
systeme.io has a feature called Automation Rules. These are simple trigger-action pairs: when something specific happens (the trigger), the system performs an action automatically.
For your funnel, the trigger is "someone submits the opt-in form" and the action is "subscribe them to the nurture campaign."
- Hover over Automations in the menu bar.
- Click Rules.
- Click Create to add a new rule.
Your rule needs two parts: a trigger that starts the automation and an action that runs automatically. Set up the trigger first.
- Click the (+) button to add a Trigger.
- Select Funnel step form subscribed.
- Choose your opt-in page title from the dropdown.
Now add the action that fires when this trigger activates.
- Click the (+) button to add an Action.
- Select Subscribe to campaign.
- Choose Leadership Nurture Sequence from the dropdown.
- Click Save rule at the top right.
You should see your saved rule on the Rules page with the trigger and action displayed.
What does this rule do?
When someone submits their email on your opt-in page, systeme.io automatically subscribes them to your Leadership Nurture Sequence campaign. They start receiving your 5-email series without any manual work from you.
systeme.io also offers a more advanced visual Workflows builder with branching logic. For a single trigger-action pair like this one, Automation Rules are simpler and do the job perfectly.
Don't see your saved rule?
- Make sure you clicked Save rule at the top right of the page. Without saving, the rule is not created.
- Check that both a Trigger and an Action are set. A rule without both parts cannot be saved.
- Help me troubleshoot my automation rule in systeme.io.
Test the full funnel end to end
The automation rule is set. Now you need to prove the entire system works by running through it exactly as a real visitor would.
Before you test, think about what should happen when you submit a new email on your opt-in page. What page should you land on? What should arrive in your inbox? What should appear in your systeme.io contacts?
- Open your opt-in page URL in a private or incognito browser window.
- Enter a fresh test email address you have access to (different from any you have used before).
- Enter a test name in the name field.
- Click your CTA button to submit the form.
You should land on the thank-you page. This confirms the form submission and page redirect are working.
- Switch to the inbox for the test email address you just used.
- Look for the first email from your nurture campaign.
Not seeing the email?
- Check your spam or junk folder. systeme.io notes that emails sent from a free email address are likely to end up in the spam box.
- The first email may take a few minutes to arrive. Wait 5-10 minutes and refresh your inbox.
- Double-check that your first campaign email has a delay of 0 days (immediate). If it has a longer delay, the email will not arrive right away.
- Help me figure out why my test email is not arriving.
- Return to systeme.io in your browser.
- Click the Contacts tab.
- Find your test contact in the list and confirm they are subscribed to Leadership Nurture Sequence.
You should see your test contact listed with the campaign subscription confirmed. Your automation rule is working correctly.
Test contact not showing up?
- Make sure you used a new email address that is not already in your contacts list. Existing contacts may not trigger the automation rule again.
- Go back to Automations then Rules and confirm your rule is saved with the correct trigger and action.
- Help me troubleshoot why my test contact is not appearing in systeme.io.
Your funnel is live and fully connected. Next up, you will dig into your funnel analytics to find out where visitors drop off and which step needs your attention first.
Read Your Funnel Analytics and Find the Weak Step
You have built every piece of the funnel and confirmed it works end to end. But building a funnel is not the same as knowing whether it works well. Right now you have no idea where visitors drop off or which step loses the most people.
systeme.io tracks analytics at every step of your funnel and every email in your campaign. In this step, you will read that data, compare conversion rates across the entire funnel, and pinpoint the single weakest step so you know exactly where to focus your first improvement.
In this step, get ready to:
- Review your funnel's step-by-step analytics (page views, opt-ins, conversion rate).
- Review your email campaign statistics (total sent, total opened, open rate).
- Identify the weakest conversion step and write down one specific change to improve it.
Review funnel step analytics
Every funnel page in systeme.io tracks how many people visit and how many take the desired action. These numbers update in real time, so even your test submissions from the previous step will appear.
- Navigate to the Sites tab in the top menu bar.
- Click Sales funnels.
- Find your Code to Leadership Funnel and open it.
- Look for the statistics or analytics view for your funnel. You should see step-by-step data including page views, number of opt-ins, and the conversion rate for each step.
With your test submissions from the previous step, you should see at least one page view on the opt-in page and one opt-in recorded.
What do these funnel metrics mean?
Page views count how many times someone loaded a funnel page. Opt-ins count how many visitors submitted the email form.
The conversion rate is the percentage of page viewers who took that action. A focused lead-magnet opt-in page typically converts between 40-60% of visitors.
Small test numbers are expected
Your data will only reflect your test submissions right now. The numbers will be small, but the important thing is that you know exactly where to look when real traffic arrives.
Review email campaign analytics
Funnel analytics show you what happens on your pages. Email analytics show you what happens after someone opts in. Together, they tell the full story of your funnel.
- Click the Emails tab in the top menu bar.
- Open the email statistics page.
You should see a dashboard with four summary metrics at the top and a table of individual emails below.
- Review the summary metrics: Number of emails sent, Average percentage of opened emails, Average percentage of spam reports per opened email, and Average percentage of bounced emails.
- Scroll down to the Emails table. Each row shows an email's subject line alongside its Total sent, Total opened, Spam reports, and Bounced count.
- Identify which of your five emails has the highest and lowest open counts.
What does each email metric tell you?
Low Total opened numbers point to a subject-line problem. If people are not opening the email, they never see its content.
High Spam reports numbers signal that the email content does not match what subscribers expected when they opted in. High Bounced numbers indicate invalid email addresses on your list.
Identify your weakest step
You have now seen both sides of your funnel data: page conversion rates and email engagement. The step with the biggest drop-off is where you should focus your first improvement.
- Compare conversion rates across the full funnel path: the opt-in page conversion rate, the email open rates for each of your five emails, and click-through to the sales page.
- Find the step with the biggest percentage drop-off. This is your weakest step.
- Write down one specific change you would make to improve that step.
What kind of changes should I write down?
Match your improvement to the type of drop-off you see. If the opt-in page conversion is low, rewrite the headline or shorten the form. If an email has a low open rate, change its subject line. If emails are opened but nobody clicks through to the sales page, strengthen the call-to-action in that email.
Always change one thing at a time. If you change the headline and the form and the email subject all at once, you will not know which change made the difference.
Before you look at your final answer, think about this: based on everything you have built, which step do you predict is the weakest link in your funnel right now?
Now check your data. In your funnel's analytics view, you should see page views, opt-in rates, and step-by-step conversion data. Under the Emails tab, you should see the open rate and engagement data for each email in your campaign. The step with the biggest gap between visitors in and visitors out is where your written improvement plan should focus.
Not seeing any data in the analytics?
Make sure you completed the end-to-end test in Step 4 using a fresh email address on your live opt-in page. If you skipped the test or used the page editor's preview mode, no data will be recorded.
If the email statistics show zero sent, check that your automation rule is active under Automations then Rules. Then submit a new test opt-in and wait a few minutes for the first campaign email to send.

Nice work! You just built a complete evergreen marketing funnel from scratch using systeme.io. From a blank account to a live system that captures leads, nurtures them over email, and presents your course offer, all running on autopilot.
You've learned how to:
- Built a lead-magnet funnel with an opt-in page, thank-you page, and sales page that captures emails and guides visitors toward your course offer.
- Created a 5-email automated nurture sequence that delivers value, handles objections, and softly pitches your course over a series of timed emails.
- Connected everything with an automation rule so the funnel runs without manual intervention, and used funnel analytics to find the weakest conversion step and plan a specific improvement.
- Secret Mission: Ran an A/B test on your opt-in page headline to optimize conversions with real data instead of guesswork.
