Build an Instagram Carousel with Claude
Design a publish-ready 5-slide Instagram carousel optimized for reach.
Introduction
30 Second Summary
You spend time creating Instagram content, but most posts barely get seen. The difference between carousels that go viral and ones that disappear comes down to how they are engineered for saves, shares, and search discoverability.
In this project, you will build a publish-ready 5-slide Instagram carousel entirely within Claude, covering strategy, copywriting, and visual design in one workflow. You will also develop keyword-rich captions optimized for both Instagram search and Google discoverability.
What You'll Build
A complete Instagram carousel post engineered for maximum discoverability and reach, built entirely with Claude's AI-assisted strategy, copywriting, and design tools.
By the end of this project, you'll have:
- A 5-slide Instagram carousel (1080 x 1350 px) designed in Claude Design and exported ready to publish.
- A keyword-rich caption system including a main caption and per-slide captions optimized for Instagram and Google search.
- A reusable content brief saved in Google Docs that you can use as a template for future carousels.
- Secret Mission: Repurpose your carousel for LinkedIn with adjusted dimensions and a professional tone.
Are there any prerequisites?
You will need a Claude Pro subscription (or higher) to access Claude Design. You will also need an iPad with Safari for the design workflow in this project.
Before We Start
Before We Start...
Set Up Your Workspace
This project uses two parts of Claude together. You will use the regular Claude chat to develop strategy and write copy, then use Claude Design to create the actual carousel visuals.
In this step, you will open both tools and create a Google Docs document to save your content brief for reuse on future carousels.
In this step, get ready to:
- Open Claude and confirm Claude Design is accessible.
- Create a Google Docs content brief for your carousel.
- Send a test message to confirm Claude chat is working.
Open Claude on your iPad
Claude Design is a separate workspace within Claude for creating visual content like slides, prototypes, and social media assets. You will access it through its own URL alongside the regular chat.
- Open Safari on your iPad.
- Navigate to claude.ai and sign in with your Claude Pro account.
- Once signed in, open a new tab in Safari.
- Navigate to claude.ai/design to open Claude Design.
- Confirm you can see the Claude Design canvas. You should see a clean workspace where you can describe what you need and Claude will generate a first version.
What is Claude Design?
Claude Design is a prompt-driven design canvas. You describe what you want to create, and Claude builds a first version that you can then refine through conversation, inline comments, and direct edits.
It is available in research preview for Claude Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise subscribers. Your Pro subscription includes access.
✔️ I can see the Claude Design canvas
You are all set. Keep this tab open for later when you design your carousel slides.
ⓧ I see a login page or error
- Make sure you are signed into your Claude Pro account (not a free account).
- Try refreshing the page. Claude Design may take a moment to load on the first visit.
- If you are redirected to the main Claude chat, look for Design in the sidebar navigation instead.
Still can't access Claude Design?
Claude Design is in research preview and is rolling out gradually. If you do not see it yet, check back in a few hours or ask for help troubleshooting your Claude Design access.
Create your Google Docs content brief
You will save all your strategy notes, slide copy, and captions in a single document. This becomes a reusable template for future carousel projects.
- Open a new Safari tab on your iPad.
- Navigate to docs.google.com and sign in to your Google account.
- Tap the + button (or Blank document) to create a new document.
- Tap the document title at the top (it will say "Untitled document") and rename it to Carousel Content Brief.
- Leave the document open. You will paste your strategy and captions into it throughout the project.
Keep your tabs organized
You will switch between three Safari tabs during this project: Claude chat, Claude Design, and your Google Docs brief. Consider arranging them in that order so they are easy to find.
Confirm Claude chat is working
The regular Claude chat is where you will develop your content strategy and write all your captions. A quick test message confirms everything is connected before you start the creative work.
- Switch back to your claude.ai tab (the regular chat, not Claude Design).
- Start a new conversation by tapping New chat.
- Type a short test message like Hello, can you help me create an Instagram carousel? and send it.
- Confirm Claude responds with a helpful reply. This is the conversation you will use for strategy and copywriting in the next step.
Why two separate Claude workspaces?
Claude chat is optimized for conversation, brainstorming, and writing. Claude Design is optimized for visual creation with a canvas-based interface.
You will use chat to develop your strategy and write slide copy, then move to Claude Design to turn that copy into polished visual slides.
Not getting a response?
Check that your internet connection is stable. If Claude is slow to respond, wait a moment and try again. You can also ask for help troubleshooting your Claude connection.
Your workspace is ready. You have Claude chat for strategy, Claude Design for visuals, and a Google Docs brief to capture everything. Next up, you will develop your carousel content strategy with Claude.
Develop Your Content Strategy with Claude
Your workspace is set up with Claude and Google Docs ready to go. Now it's time to develop the content strategy that powers your carousel.
Instagram's algorithm favors posts that earn saves, shares, and sends over raw likes. You'll use Claude to craft a topic angle and slide structure designed to trigger those high-value engagement signals.
In this step, get ready to:
- Choose a carousel topic angle optimized for saves and shares.
- Generate a 5-slide content structure with Claude.
- Save your slide content to your Google Docs brief.
Choose your carousel topic and angle
A carousel that teaches something useful gets saved for later. One that explains a common problem gets sent to a friend. Both signals tell the algorithm your content deserves wider reach.
- Switch back to Claude in Safari on your iPad.
- Start a new conversation by clicking New chat in the sidebar.
- Ask Claude to suggest 3 topic angles for your niche that would make someone save the post or send it to a friend. Include your niche or area of expertise in the prompt so Claude can tailor its suggestions.
- Review the 3 suggestions Claude provides. Select the angle that feels most natural to you and that you could speak on with confidence.
Why optimize for saves and shares?
Instagram's algorithm in 2026 weighs engagement signals differently. Saves and sends carry more weight than likes for reaching non-followers through Explore and recommendations.
Carousels naturally encourage longer dwell time because viewers swipe through multiple slides. When paired with content worth saving, they become one of the highest-performing post formats on the platform.
Pick a topic you know well
The best carousel topics come from questions people already ask you. Think about what friends, colleagues, or followers frequently come to you for advice on. That overlap between your expertise and audience curiosity is where save-worthy content lives.
Generate your 5-slide content structure
With your topic angle chosen, you need specific text for each slide. A strong carousel follows a predictable arc: hook the viewer, deliver value, then tell them what to do next.
- In the same Claude conversation, ask Claude to write the text content for a 5-slide carousel on your chosen topic angle. Include this structure in your prompt:
- Tell Claude you want the actual words that will appear on each slide, not just descriptions of what the slides should contain.
- Review Claude's output. You should have specific, concrete text for all 5 slides that you could place directly onto a visual design.
What makes a strong Slide 1?
Your hook slide needs to work at thumbnail size in someone's feed. That means short, punchy text that creates curiosity or names a specific pain point. Questions and bold claims tend to outperform vague titles.
If Claude gives you something generic like "5 Tips for Success," ask it to rewrite with a more specific angle. The more precisely you name the audience's problem, the more likely they are to swipe.
Claude's suggestions feel too generic?
Give Claude more context about your specific audience. Instead of saying "make it about productivity," try "my audience is freelance designers who struggle with client boundaries." The more specific your input, the more targeted Claude's output becomes.
You can also ask Claude to rewrite a specific slide with a different angle or tone.
Help me get more specific carousel content from Claude.
Copy your content into Google Docs
Saving your slide content outside of Claude means you have a reusable template. Next time you create a carousel, you can duplicate this structure and swap in a new topic without rebuilding from scratch.
- Switch to your Carousel Content Brief document in Google Docs.
- At the top of the document, note your chosen topic angle and target audience.
- Below that, copy the slide-by-slide text content from your Claude conversation. Label each slide clearly (Slide 1, Slide 2, etc.) so you can reference them during design.
Your Google Docs brief should now have your topic angle at the top and five clearly labeled slides with specific text content below it.
Why save this to Google Docs?
This document becomes your reusable content template. The 5-slide framework (hook, value, value, value, CTA) works for any topic. Future carousels start from this same structure with new content swapped in.
Your content strategy is locked in and saved. Next, you'll write keyword-rich captions that make your carousel discoverable on both Instagram and Google search.
Write Discoverability-Optimized Captions
Your content strategy is locked in. You have a 5-slide structure built for saves and shares, with every slide serving a clear purpose.
Now it is time to write the captions that make your carousel discoverable. Instagram captions are no longer just engagement text. They function as searchable metadata that Google indexes and Instagram's own search uses to surface content to new audiences.
In this step, get ready to:
- Write a keyword-rich main caption with a hook opening and a save/share CTA.
- Generate 5 per-slide captions tailored to each frame's content.
- Save all captions to your Google Docs brief for reuse.
Prompt Claude to write your main caption
Your main caption is the primary text that appears below your carousel post. Since Google began indexing public Instagram content in July 2025, captions now function like meta descriptions for search engines.
- In your existing Claude conversation, ask Claude to write a main caption for your carousel post.
- Tell Claude to include relevant keywords your target audience would search for, both on Instagram and Google.
- Ask Claude to use a hook in the first line that encourages readers to tap and expand the full caption.
- Ask Claude to end the caption with a call-to-action encouraging saves or shares.
Review Claude's response. Your main caption should have a compelling first line, natural keyword placement throughout, and end with a clear CTA.
Why keywords in Instagram captions?
Google began indexing eligible Instagram content from public professional and creator accounts in July 2025. This means your captions, alt text, and bio can surface in Google Search results.
Writing keyword-rich captions helps your carousel get discovered by people searching for your topic. Instead of writing captions just for your existing followers, you are writing them for anyone searching for that information.
Refine if the caption feels generic
If Claude's first draft feels too broad, follow up by asking Claude to make the keywords more specific to your niche. For example, instead of "productivity tips," ask for keywords like "time blocking for freelance designers."
Generate per-slide captions
Instagram rolled out per-slide captions on June 18, 2026. This feature lets you attach a unique caption to each slide in your carousel, and the caption updates dynamically as viewers swipe through.
- In the same Claude conversation, ask Claude to write individual per-slide captions for each of your 5 slides.
- Explain to Claude that Instagram now allows a unique caption for each carousel slide, and these captions update dynamically as viewers swipe.
- Ask Claude to make each per-slide caption add context specific to that frame's content.
- Ask Claude to include one relevant keyword or phrase naturally in each per-slide caption.
Claude should respond with 5 distinct captions, each tailored to a specific slide. The caption for your hook slide will differ from the caption for your CTA slide.
What are per-slide captions?
When creating a carousel, you can now toggle between "Single caption" and "Multiple captions" in the caption field. Each slide gets its own caption that appears dynamically as viewers swipe through your post.
This is a massive discoverability advantage. Instead of one caption carrying all your keywords, you now have 5 separate surfaces for keyword-rich, contextual text that Instagram and Google can index.
Save your captions to Google Docs
- Switch back to your Google Docs "Carousel Content Brief" document.
- Create a new heading called "Captions" below your existing slide content section.
- Copy and paste your main caption under the "Captions" heading.
- Below the main caption, paste each of the 5 per-slide captions, labeled by slide number (Slide 1, Slide 2, etc.).
Your Google Docs brief now has both the slide content outline from earlier and a complete Captions section. This document becomes your reusable template for future carousels.
Captions feel too similar to each other?
If your per-slide captions read like slight variations of the same sentence, go back to Claude and ask it to focus each caption on a different angle or benefit from that specific slide's content. Remind Claude that each caption should stand alone as a micro-context for its frame.
Help me make my per-slide captions more distinct from each other
Your captions are ready to drive discoverability. Next, you will bring your carousel to life visually in Claude Design.
Design Your Carousel in Claude Design
You have a solid content strategy, slide-by-slide text, and a full set of optimized captions saved in your brief.
Now it's time to bring the visual design to life. In this step, you'll use Claude Design to generate a polished 5-slide carousel, refine it for readability, and export the finished slides for posting.
In this step, get ready to:
- Create a 5-slide carousel project in Claude Design at 1080 x 1350 px.
- Refine your slide designs for readability and visual hierarchy.
- Export your finished carousel as PDF or standalone HTML.
Create your carousel project in Claude Design
Claude Design produces live code-based visuals (HTML, CSS, and React) rather than static image files. You describe what you want in a text prompt, and it generates a full visual layout you can iterate on.
- Navigate to claude.ai/design in Safari on your iPad.
- Start a new project.
- In the prompt field, describe your carousel. Include these details:
- Switch to your Google Docs brief and copy the slide text content you wrote earlier (the 5-slide outline from the top of the document).
- Paste the slide text into your Claude Design prompt so it has the exact copy to place on each slide.
- Submit the prompt. Claude Design will generate your 5-slide carousel layout.
What does Claude Design produce?
Claude Design outputs live HTML/CSS/React-based visuals, not raster images like JPEG or PNG. This means your carousel exists as functional code that you can tweak and re-export in multiple formats.
For posting to Instagram, you will export as PDF (which preserves individual slides as separate pages) or use the Canva connector to produce final image files.
Be specific in your prompt
The more detail you give Claude Design about typography size, background style, and layout preferences, the closer the first draft will be to your vision. Mention specifics like "large bold white text on slide 1" or "numbered list layout on slides 2-4" to reduce revision rounds.
Review and refine your designs
The first generated draft is a starting point. You will iterate on it using follow-up prompts until each slide is clear, readable, and visually cohesive.
- Review the generated designs slide by slide. Look at overall visual consistency across all 5 slides.
- Check Slide 1: the hook text should be large and bold enough to read at thumbnail size. If it looks small, send a follow-up prompt asking Claude Design to increase the font size and weight on the first slide.
- Check Slides 2-4: these educational slides should use visual hierarchy to make key points scannable. Look for clear headings, consistent spacing, and enough contrast between text and background.
- Check Slide 5: your call-to-action should be visually prominent. If it blends into the background, ask Claude Design to make the CTA text larger or give it a contrasting color.
- Use follow-up prompts to refine anything that needs adjustment. Examples of refinement prompts:
- Continue prompting until you are satisfied with all 5 slides.
Why thumbnail readability matters
Instagram displays carousel cover slides at a small size in the feed grid and Explore page. If your Slide 1 text is too small to read at that size, people will scroll past without stopping.
A good rule of thumb: if you pinch-zoom out on your iPad and can still read the hook text, it will work as a thumbnail.
Designs not looking right?
If the layout feels cluttered, ask Claude Design to reduce the amount of text per slide. Move overflow text to the per-slide captions you wrote in Step 3 instead.
If the slides look inconsistent, ask Claude Design to apply a unified color palette and typography across all 5 slides.

Export your finished carousel
Once you are happy with all 5 slides, it's time to export them in a format you can upload to Instagram.
- Look for the export options in your Claude Design project.
- Choose your export format. You have three good options:
- Export your carousel using your chosen format.
- Save the exported file to your iPad's Files app so you can access it when creating your Instagram post in the next step.
Which format should I pick?
PDF is the fastest path if you want to upload directly. Each page becomes one carousel slide. If you want pixel-perfect control over file dimensions and format (JPEG/PNG), export to Canva and use Canva's download feature to get individual image files at exactly 1080 x 1350 px.
Can't find the export options?
Claude Design's export options are available from the project view. If you don't see them, make sure you have completed your design (not still in a draft or editing state) and look for an export or share menu in the project toolbar.

Your carousel is designed, refined, and exported. Next up, you'll assemble the full post in Instagram's publishing flow and put your per-slide captions to work.
Prepare for Publishing
Your carousel slides are designed, exported, and saved to your iPad. Now it's time to assemble everything in Instagram's posting flow and optimize it for maximum reach.
Great visuals are only half the equation. The captions, hashtags, and alt text you add during publishing determine whether your post surfaces in Instagram search and Google results.
In this step, get ready to:
- Upload your 5 slides and enter per-slide captions.
- Add targeted hashtags and alt text for discoverability.
- Review your complete post preview before publishing.
Upload your slides and enter per-slide captions
- Open Instagram on your iPad.
- Tap the + button at the bottom of your screen to start creating a new post.
- Select your 5 exported carousel slides from your Files app.
- Arrange them in order: Slide 1 (hook) first, Slides 2-4 (educational content) in the middle, and Slide 5 (CTA) last.
- Tap Next to proceed to the caption screen.
In the caption field, you'll see the option to toggle between Single caption and Multiple captions.
- Toggle to Multiple captions to enable per-slide captions.
- Enter your main caption (from your Google Docs brief) on Slide 1.
- Swipe through each frame and enter the corresponding per-slide caption from your brief.
What are per-slide captions?
Instagram rolled out per-slide captions on June 18, 2026. Each slide in your carousel can now have its own unique caption that updates dynamically as viewers swipe through.
This means you can add keyword-rich context specific to each frame, giving your post more surface area for Instagram search and Google indexing.
Don't see the Multiple captions toggle?
Make sure your Instagram app is updated to the latest version. This feature is very new (June 2026), so you may need to update from the App Store.
If the toggle still doesn't appear after updating, enter your main caption in the single caption field and add slide-specific context as separate lines within it. Help me figure out why per-slide captions aren't showing up.
Add hashtags and alt text for discoverability
Hashtags and alt text work together to make your carousel findable. Hashtags help within Instagram's ecosystem, while alt text helps your content surface in Google search results.
- Add 3-5 targeted hashtags at the end of your main caption.
- Choose hashtags specific to your topic and audience. Avoid generic tags like #instagood or #fyp.
Pick hashtags your audience would search
Think about what your ideal viewer would type into Instagram's search bar. If your carousel teaches meal prep tips, use hashtags like #mealpreptips or #weeknightdinners rather than broad tags like #food or #healthy.
Now add alt text to each image for accessibility and search discoverability.
- Scroll to the bottom of the caption screen and tap Advanced settings.
- Tap Accessibility.
- Tap Write Alt Text.
- For each slide, write a description of the visual content and the topic it covers.
- Tap Done when you've added alt text to all 5 slides.
Why does alt text help with Google search?
Google indexes public Instagram content including captions, bios, and alt text. Descriptive alt text gives Google more context about what your carousel covers, helping it surface in relevant search results.
It also makes your content accessible to visually impaired users who rely on screen readers.
Review your complete post preview
Before publishing, take a moment to review everything as your audience will see it.
- Navigate back to the post preview screen.
- Check that Slide 1 reads clearly at thumbnail size. The hook text should be bold and legible even when small.
- Swipe through and confirm your captions flow logically from slide to slide.
- Verify that your CTA on Slide 5 is clear and actionable.
- Confirm your hashtags are specific and relevant to your topic.
Your carousel is now fully assembled and ready to publish whenever you choose.
Best times to post
You don't have to publish immediately. Save it as a draft and post when your audience is most active. Check your Instagram Insights (under your profile) to see when your followers are online.
