Build a Two-Version SDE Resume

Create campus and ATS-friendly resumes for SDE internship applications.

Introduction

30 Second Summary

An institute template can look polished during a campus process. The same logos plus tables can make a public application harder to process.

In this project, you will preserve your institute-formatted Work2Hire resume as a campus reference. Your new Google Docs version becomes a tailored one-page SDE resume that you can export as PDF or Microsoft Word.

What You'll Build

You open the role-specific file to see your strongest SDE evidence in one clean page that is ready for an off-campus application.

By the end of this project, you'll have:

  • A preserved campus reference you can use when an institute process explicitly requests its logo-and-table format.
  • A single-column off-campus resume that stays easy to scan from your name through your final section. It contains no logo, table, graphic card, page header, page footer, or multi-column layout.
  • A role-specific application pair that leads with two self-built projects plus a defensible Frammer contribution. One file is PDF. The other is DOCX.
  • Secret Mission: Run a 30-second peer scan plus a text-extraction check to prove the intended role, strongest skill, and top project stay clear.

Before We Start

Before any editing starts, this step locks in why you are keeping separate campus and off-campus resume versions. Your immediate application route determines which version you use.

Preserve the Campus Resume

The institute logo and education table in your Work2Hire resume can still serve a campus process that explicitly requests that format. Editing that file for public applications would put the campus layout at risk.

A separate Google Docs document protects the original resume. It gives you a clean starting point without carrying the logo or table into the off-campus version.

In this step, get ready to:
  • Preserve the unedited campus resume as campus-resume-baseline.pdf.
  • Confirm the downloaded campus copy matches the Work2Hire version.
  • Prepare a blank SDE Resume - Base document beside the baseline.
Download the campus baseline

The baseline is a frozen reference for campus applications. Saving it before making changes protects the institute-formatted version from accidental edits.

  • In Brave, return to the Work2Hire resume you accessed earlier.
  • Sign in with your existing Work2Hire account if prompted.
  • Confirm the visible resume still shows the institute logo.
  • Confirm the Education area still uses the existing table.
  • Use the resume page's download control to download the unchanged document as a PDF.

Brave shows a completed download when the file is ready on your Mac.

  • Reveal the completed PDF in Finder from Brave's downloads list.

Finder highlights the downloaded file so you can give it a stable reference name.

  • Press Return to make the highlighted filename editable.
  • Type campus-resume-baseline.pdf as the new filename.
  • Press Return to apply the new filename.

Good call. Your original campus resume is now preserved locally as campus-resume-baseline.pdf.

Cannot find the downloaded PDF?

  • Check that the Work2Hire resume finished loading before downloading.
  • Check Brave's downloads list for a blocked or incomplete file.
  • Repeat the download from the unchanged Work2Hire resume page.

Ask for help if the file still does not appear. Help me find and preserve a PDF downloaded from Work2Hire in Brave on my Mac.

Confirm the campus copy

A PDF keeps the campus version available as a separate reference file. Opening it now catches an incomplete or incorrect download before you begin the off-campus document.

  • Drag campus-resume-baseline.pdf from Finder into the Brave window to open it in a new tab.

You will see the downloaded campus resume inside Brave.

  • Switch to the Work2Hire resume tab.
  • Compare the institute logo with the downloaded PDF.
  • Compare the education table with the downloaded PDF.
  • Compare the visible resume text with the downloaded PDF.
  • Return to the campus-resume-baseline.pdf tab.
  • Keep the PDF tab open as your campus-reference copy.

The logo and education table should match the Work2Hire resume. This confirms that the baseline preserves the unedited campus format.

Prepare the blank off-campus document

The off-campus version starts as a blank document so its structure stays independent. Keeping verified facts separate from the old layout prevents the logo or table from becoming part of the new resume.

  • Press Cmd+T to open a new Brave tab.
  • Enter docs.google.com in the address bar.
  • Press Return to load the page.

You will see the Google Docs start page or a Google sign-in page.

  • Sign in with your existing Google account if prompted.

You will see the Google Docs home page after signing in.

  • Select Blank to create a new document.

You will see a new document with an empty page.

  • Select the document title field in the top-left corner.
  • Type SDE Resume - Base as the document name.

The new name appears at the top of the document. Google Docs saves the change automatically while you are online.

  • Drag the SDE Resume - Base tab beside the campus-resume-baseline.pdf tab.

Why keep both tabs together?

The campus PDF supplies verified facts such as dates or qualifications. The blank Google Doc receives those facts later without inheriting the institute logo or education table.

Before the final check, predict where the institute layout should appear. Predict what the new document should contain.

  • Switch to the campus-resume-baseline.pdf tab.
  • Confirm the institute logo is visible.
  • Confirm the education table is visible.
  • Switch to the SDE Resume - Base tab.
  • Confirm the document title reads SDE Resume - Base.
  • Confirm the document body is blank.
  • Leave the two tabs beside each other in Brave.

In the PDF tab, you will see the institute logo and education table from Work2Hire. In the Google Docs tab, you will see the title SDE Resume - Base above a blank page.

You have now separated the preserved campus baseline from the blank off-campus document.

✔️ Everything is ready

Your unedited campus baseline is preserved locally. Your blank off-campus document is open beside it in Brave.

ⓧ I'd like to double check the final state

  • Confirm Work2Hire remains available in its signed-in tab.
  • Confirm the local file is named campus-resume-baseline.pdf.
  • Confirm the PDF contains the institute logo.
  • Confirm the PDF contains the education table.
  • Confirm the PDF matches the unedited Work2Hire resume.
  • Confirm the blank Google Docs document is named SDE Resume - Base.
  • Confirm the Google Docs document body is empty.
  • Confirm the PDF tab sits beside the Google Docs tab in Brave.

Your campus reference is safe. Next, you will turn the blank Google Doc into a plain single-column resume skeleton.

Build a Single-Column Resume

Your campus-format PDF is safely preserved. The institute layout remains available for a campus process that requests it.

Logos create avoidable parsing risk for some applicant tracking systems. Tables can also disrupt the reading order.

A single-column layout keeps every section in one top-to-bottom flow. You will build that skeleton in Google Docs without copying the visual structure from the campus version.

In this step, get ready to:
  • Create a text-only body header with your contact details.
  • Add ordinary-text Education entries plus standard resume headings.
  • Format the skeleton as a plain one-page document.
Create the text-only header

Resume contact details belong in the normal page body. This keeps them in the same reading flow as every section below.

  • Switch back to the SDE Resume - Base tab from earlier.
  • Click at the top-left of the blank page inside the normal document body.
  • Type your full name on the first line.

You should see your name at the top of the page inside the editable body area.

  • Press Enter once.
  • Type your phone number, professional email, LinkedIn URL, and GitHub URL on the second line.

You should now see your name followed by one text-only contact line. Both lines remain part of the normal document body.

Contact Details Outside the Body?

  • Use the undo control to remove the misplaced contact text.
  • Click inside the normal white page area below the top margin.
  • Type the contact details again.

Ask for help if the contact text keeps entering a separate page area. Help me place my resume contact details in the normal Google Docs body without using a page header or text box.

Add the resume sections

Standard section headings make the document easier to scan. Ordinary Education lines also preserve a direct top-to-bottom reading order.

  • Press Enter twice after the contact line.
  • Type Education on its own line.

You should see a clear break between the contact block and the first resume section.

  • Switch to the campus-resume-baseline.pdf tab from earlier.
  • Check each qualification, institution, and date against the preserved baseline.
  • Return to SDE Resume - Base.
  • Type each verified qualification as ordinary text lines below Education.

Your Education details should now read in a simple vertical sequence. No fact sits inside a table cell.

  • Place the cursor after the final Education line.
  • Add Skills, Projects, Experience, and Leadership as separate lines in that order.

You should now see all five standard headings in one continuous text column. The sections below Education stay empty for the evidence work in the next step.

Format and verify the skeleton

A simple 10-to-11-point body font keeps a student resume readable within one page. Consistent bolding makes each section boundary easy to find.

  • Drag from the first character of your name to the final heading to select all text.
  • Choose Arial from the font control in the Google Docs toolbar.

The entire skeleton should now use one simple font.

  • Enter 10 or 11 in the font-size control.

Your body text should remain easy to read without crowding the page.

  • Select your name.
  • Apply bold using the formatting toolbar.

Your name should now stand out from the contact line.

  • Repeat the same bold formatting for Education, Skills, Projects, Experience, and Leadership.

Each section heading should now have the same visual weight.

  • Add one blank line between the end of each section and the next heading.
  • Remove any additional blank lines until the final heading remains on the first page.

The sections should feel separate without leaving large empty gaps.

Before your final check, do you expect every section to follow one uninterrupted top-to-bottom reading path?

  • Scroll from your name to Leadership.
  • Confirm Leadership remains on the first page.
  • Inspect the document for one uninterrupted column of text.
  • Confirm the page contains no logo, image, table, text box, separate page header, footer, graphic card, icon, decorative skill bar, or colored visual element.

What Should You See?

You should see a single page with one top-to-bottom text column. The contact block and five section headings stay inside the normal document body.

The page uses a simple font with consistent bolding and readable spacing. Its structure does not depend on visual elements that could disrupt text order.

Does the Skeleton Spill Onto Two Pages?

  • Remove extra blank lines between sections.
  • Confirm all body text uses a size of 10 or 11.
  • Check that no table or text box came across from the baseline PDF.

If the page still overflows, help me diagnose why my Google Docs resume skeleton uses more than one page.

That is the foundation secured. Your off-campus resume now has a plain one-page structure that keeps its content in a logical reading order.

Protect Your Contact Details

The validation image only needs to prove the layout. Keep your phone number, email address, and profile URLs unreadable in the uploaded screenshot.

Your resume structure is ready. Next, you will replace the empty sections with evidence you can defend in an interview.

Add Defensible SDE Evidence

Your plain Google Docs skeleton now gives every section a clear place. This step fills that space with evidence you can defend.

Clean formatting cannot rescue invented claims or low-ownership content. Every retained line should survive a detailed interview question.

In this step, get ready to:
  • Lead with your two strongest self-built software projects.
  • Frame your team contributions with precise ownership.
  • Audit every remaining claim for defensibility.
Prioritize your strongest self-built projects

A strong project entry shows what problem you addressed. It also makes your personal implementation easy to identify.

  • Switch back to the SDE Resume - Base tab from earlier.
  • Locate the Projects heading.
  • Place your strongest self-built software project first.
  • Place your second-strongest self-built software project directly below it.

You should now see your two strongest examples at the top of Projects.

  • Write one bullet under each project that names the problem you addressed.
  • Write another bullet under each project that identifies your personal implementation.
  • Read both project entries aloud to check whether your ownership is obvious.

Each entry should let a reader distinguish your work from the surrounding project.

  • Add only the technologies you personally used under each project.
  • Add a result only when you can verify it.
  • Verify every retained result against evidence you still have.

A repository or working demo can support implementation details. Notes or measured output can support a result.

  • Delete every percentage that lacks supporting evidence.
  • Delete every metric that you cannot reproduce or explain.
  • Review the two entries once more to confirm that each claim belongs to you.
Frame team contributions truthfully

Team experience adds value when your scope is precise. A narrow contribution you can explain carries more weight than broad ownership you cannot support.

  • Add or update Frammer below the two self-built projects.
  • Set your role to Frontend Contributor.

The Projects section should now begin with two self-built projects. Frammer should follow them as a scoped team contribution.

  • Add one bullet naming the exact dashboard, page, component, or bug you handled.
  • Use a truthful action verb that matches what you personally did.
  • Read the entry aloud to confirm that you can explain every technical detail.

The Frammer entry should describe one concrete contribution. Its wording should stay within the work you performed.

  • Delete any Frammer claim that suggests ownership of the entire product.
  • Remove Synthetic-Bull from Projects.
  • Scan the project list to confirm that Synthetic-Bull is absent.

Good work. Your project section now separates owned implementation from observed participation.

Audit every remaining claim

The same evidence standard applies beyond projects. Your Skills section should contain only abilities you can discuss or demonstrate.

  • Return to the Skills section.
  • Review each listed skill against work you have completed.
  • Delete every skill that you cannot discuss or demonstrate.
  • Choose one real example that supports each retained skill.

Every remaining skill should connect to a project, contribution, course task, or working example you can explain.

What should the final audit catch?

A defensibility audit catches claims that entered through a template or an earlier draft. These lines weaken the evidence around them.

  • Placeholder organizations do not describe your experience.
  • Unsupported percentages or metrics lack evidence.
  • Invented awards cannot survive a follow-up question.
  • Placeholder certifications claim credentials you do not hold.
  • Generic coursework uses space without strengthening the target application.
  • Empty sections interrupt the page without adding evidence.
  • Audit the complete document against the list above.
  • Delete every line that fails the audit.
  • Remove every section heading that has no truthful content beneath it.

Before the final review, predict whether every retained line will survive a specific interview follow-up.

  • Read the complete page from your name to the final retained section.
  • Confirm that the two strongest self-built projects appear first.
  • Confirm that each project identifies your personal implementation.
  • Confirm that Frammer names your exact frontend contribution.
  • Confirm that Synthetic-Bull does not appear in Projects.
  • Confirm that every retained skill has a real example behind it.
  • Confirm that the complete resume still fits on one page.

You should now see a one-page resume with two self-built projects at the top. Every remaining claim should be specific enough to explain without guessing.

Found a claim you cannot defend?

Replace a broad claim with the smallest accurate contribution you can describe. Remove the line when you cannot identify a truthful scope.

Use Help me rewrite an unsupported resume claim as a truthful contribution.

✔️ My evidence is defensible

Your resume now leads with work you own. Its remaining claims are ready for interview follow-up.

ⓧ I'd like to double check the final state

  • Confirm the page still uses the plain one-page single-column structure from earlier.
  • Confirm that Projects begins with your two strongest self-built software projects.
  • Confirm that each project states its problem.
  • Confirm that each project identifies your personal implementation.
  • Confirm that each project names only technologies you personally used.
  • Confirm that each retained result has supporting evidence.
  • Confirm that Frammer uses the role Frontend Contributor.
  • Confirm that the Frammer entry names the exact frontend work you handled.
  • Confirm that Synthetic-Bull is excluded from Projects.
  • Confirm that every skill is demonstrable.
  • Confirm that no placeholder or unsupported claim remains.
  • Confirm that no empty section remains.

Your resume now presents evidence you can stand behind. Next, you will tailor this base for one SDE internship before exporting the application files.

Tailor and Export Your Resume

Your Google Docs base now contains evidence you can defend. This step turns that reusable foundation into one application-ready SDE resume.

Each employer emphasizes a different mix of skills. Application portals can also request different file types.

You will protect the base by tailoring a separate copy. You will export that copy as a PDF plus a Microsoft Word DOCX file.

In this step, get ready to:
  • Preserve the reusable base in a separate role-specific copy.
  • Prioritize the strongest truthful evidence for the target role.
  • Produce tested application files in both requested formats.
Create a role-specific copy

The base document should remain reusable across future applications. A separate copy gives this employer its own evidence order without changing the original.

  • Switch back to SDE Resume - Base in Google Docs.
  • Record the employer from your target job description as target company.
  • Select File from the document menu.
  • Select Make a copy.
  • Enter target company - SDE Internship Resume in the name field.
  • Select Ok.
  • Confirm the new document title reads target company - SDE Internship Resume.

Why make a copy?

The copy becomes the application-specific document. SDE Resume - Base stays ready for your next opportunity.

Google Docs saves online changes automatically. The document title helps you avoid editing or submitting the wrong version.

Prioritize truthful evidence

Tailoring helps a recruiter plus an ATS find the most relevant evidence sooner. Every retained skill must still describe something you can discuss or demonstrate.

  • Place the target job description beside the role-specific document.
  • Identify each required or preferred skill that you can personally demonstrate.
  • Move matching demonstrable skills to the start of the Skills section.
  • Reorder the project bullets so the strongest role-relevant evidence appears first.
  • Leave out every requested skill that you cannot defend with an example.
  • Switch back to SDE Resume - Base.
  • Confirm the base still shows its original skills plus project-bullet order.
  • Return to the role-specific copy.

You should see role-relevant evidence earlier in the copy. The base should still show its original order.

That separation is now working. Your base remains reusable for the next application.

Why does order matter?

The first relevant skills plus project bullets receive the quickest attention. Reordering surfaces your strongest match without inventing new experience.

Use language from the job description only when it truthfully describes your work. You must be able to explain every retained claim in an interview.

Export and test both files

Application portals may request PDF or DOCX. Google Docs can download the role-specific document in both formats.

  • Select File in the role-specific document.
  • Select Download.
  • Choose the PDF file type.

You should see a new file named target company - SDE Internship Resume.pdf in your Mac download location.

  • Return to the role-specific document.
  • Select File.
  • Select Download.
  • Choose Microsoft Word format.

You should now see target company - SDE Internship Resume.docx beside the .pdf export.

Use the requested format

Keep both exports ready because different portals can request different formats. The application portal's stated file type determines which one you submit.

  • Open Finder from the Dock.
  • Select Downloads in the Finder sidebar.
  • Double-click target company - SDE Internship Resume.pdf.
  • Confirm the PDF remains one page without clipping.
  • Open every contact link in the PDF.
  • Select one line of PDF text to confirm that the text remains selectable.

The PDF should show the complete resume on one page. Its contact links should open their intended destinations.

What does the PDF check prove?

The visual check catches content that moved beyond a page boundary during export. Selectable text confirms that the resume did not become a flat image.

  • Close the PDF file.
  • Double-click target company - SDE Internship Resume.docx.
  • Confirm the DOCX file remains one page without clipping.
  • Compare every date with the PDF for consistency.
  • Open every contact link in the DOCX file.

The DOCX file should preserve the same one-page content. Its dates plus links should match the PDF.

Did an export change the layout?

Compare the role-specific document with the affected export. An accidental blank line or an incomplete download can change the result.

Return to the role-specific Google Doc to remove any accidental blank line. Download fresh PDF plus DOCX files after the correction.

If the DOCX file has no associated app, select it in Finder and press the Space bar to preview it with Quick Look. Help me diagnose a resume export that changed layout or cannot be reviewed on my Mac.

Before you test the PDF's reading order, where do you think the copied contact details plus section headings will land?

  • Open docs.google.com in a new Brave tab.
  • Select Blank.
  • Return to the local PDF file.
  • Press Cmd+A to select all PDF text.
  • Press Cmd+C to copy the selected text.
  • Switch back to the blank Google Doc.
  • Press Cmd+V to paste the copied text.
  • Confirm the pasted text follows a logical top-to-bottom reading order.

You should see your name plus contact details first. The section text should then follow the document order from Education through Leadership.

  • Check the application portal for its requested file type.
  • Use the matching export when you submit your application.

Your role-specific package is ready for the portal. You now have a tested PDF plus a tested DOCX file without changing the reusable base.

✔️ Both files passed every check

Your role-specific resume is available as a tested PDF plus DOCX file. Keep both files ready until the application portal tells you which format to submit.

ⓧ I'd like to double check the final state

  • Confirm SDE Resume - Base still contains the original reusable evidence order.
  • Confirm the role-specific Google Doc is named target company - SDE Internship Resume.
  • Confirm the role-specific copy changes only the order of truthful skills plus project bullets.
  • Confirm the local PDF is one page with selectable text plus logical reading order.
  • Confirm the local DOCX is one page with consistent dates plus working links.
  • Confirm campus-resume-baseline.pdf remains available as the unedited campus reference.

Secret mission

Run the 30-Second Human and Parsing Test

Give your role-specific resume a silent 30-second peer scan. Use the results to revise weak lines before refreshing both application files.

Clean Up Your Resources

Clean Up Your Resources

Decide whether to keep your resume system ready, pause your current review session, or delete the files entirely. These documents have no ongoing project costs through your existing Google Docs and Work2Hire access.

Resources you used:

  • A local Work2Hire campus reference named campus-resume-baseline.pdf.
  • The reusable SDE Resume - Base document in Google Docs.
  • The role-specific Google Docs resume revised after the peer scan and text-order check.
  • The refreshed role-specific PDF export.
  • The refreshed role-specific DOCX export.
  • The temporary blank Google Doc used for the PDF text-order check.

Keep everything running

No action is needed. Choose this if you plan to reuse the base resume or tailor more applications.

  • Retain campus-resume-baseline.pdf for campus processes that request the institute format.
  • Keep SDE Resume - Base unchanged for future off-campus applications.
  • Keep the role-specific Google Docs resume as an application-ready version.
  • Keep the temporary text-order document as a record of the parsing check.
  • Store the refreshed PDF export for portals that request PDF.
  • Store the refreshed DOCX export for portals that request Microsoft Word.

Pause - I'll come back to this later

End your current browser session while preserving every document. Your resume files do not require a running process.

Nice Work!

Nice Work!

You did it! You now have separate campus and off-campus resumes for different application paths. Your role-specific files are ready for submission in the employer's requested format.

What you learned:

  • Preserved the campus-format baseline as campus-resume-baseline.pdf. Kept its institute logo and education table available for campus processes that request that format.
  • Built a reusable single-column SDE resume in Google Docs. Removed logos, tables, graphics, headers, footers, text boxes, and multi-column formatting.
  • Replaced weak claims with defensible SDE evidence. Tailored a role-specific copy before exporting submission-ready PDF and DOCX files.
  • Secret Mission: Proved the revised resume communicates its target role through a 30-second peer scan. Confirmed its selectable text follows a sensible top-to-bottom order.
